I got a call at 10 tonight telling me my Mom is in the hospital. that she was found in the bathroom barely breathing. Shes in a hospital 2 hours away, and the nurse won't tell me anything because of HIPAA regulations. I am scared, and sad, and just extremely worried.

I am so sorry for you and your mom. I do hope that she gets better soon.

I joined the "Caring for Aging Parents" after my mother in law moved in. I learned a lot of good things there, one such tip is that your mom can sign a document that gives you various levels of access to her care. At the top of the list is medical power of attorney, which lets you make decisions for her. Another common one is one that gives you access to her information, but not power to make decisions. This latter one would allow the nurse to bring you up to date on all medical matters.

Pepper. The nurse is probably not able to tell her about her mother's condition because it is over the phone...I'd be on a bus or something.

May not, trigger, too. At least, not me. Glad you trust your community enough to come and tell us. WE cannot support you if we don't know what is going on. Information will come to you. It will just take time.

How about a gentle (hugg)?

My wife is on the "OK to tell" list for her mother's issues are her other children. They are able to get all sorts of information about her over the phone. This is done with my MIL's knowledge.

I on the other hand, am not on that list. When they call for her (she lives with us) all they are allowed to tell me is what her appointment time is, and for which doctor it is for.
