Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I could NEVER do the big "S", and I'm miserable in my life; no friends, a dead-end job, barely enough money to make ends meet. The worst thing is that I'm 71 and still have all the physical and desires to play and have fun that I had when I was 30! But I lost everything a few years ago and haven't been able to recover financially or emotionally since than.
I lost my beautiful home of 20+ years and am now living in what I call my "Little Blue Spiritual Tin Can" - a very small mobile home that just brings me no joy. I've no desire to decorate (plus 1) I'm not good at it, 2) don't like to and 3) don't have the money, so I'm just wasting time doing nothing. I managed to get a free "Y" membership and went there 3 times so far. One would think with all the other people there, I might actually have a conversation/connect with someone, but I just go and leave. At least I went. I can't get out the door to visit the other places I "could" go - couple of spiritual centers. When I did go: same thing: a little small talk here and there and then I pretty much bolted and went home.
Someone used the term "socially deprived" to describe me and it fits, although it hurt like hell to acknowledge that it's true. And it didn't used to be this way, but with my circumstances such as they are, I just don't want be around anyone - hard, if not impossible to have a decent conversation. (And, yes, I've done the "2 ears/one mouth" thing and just listened, but that hasn't seemed to change anything.
So, I just sort of wander thru life, bumping into things, with no direction. I can only hold on to the belief that this is not how I'm supposed to live the rest of my life and either I will change or circumstances will. I don't dwell on the past, yet I know that, even with the depression I've had most of my life, I did have some enjoyable times with friends and actually contributed to the world. Now, well, I don't know.........

I got an email from Kohl's that I had a 40% off coupon for today and tomorrow only. It took me about an hour but I placed an order and got some great deals. I have been wanting a new dress. I like dressing up sometimes. My birthday is coming up and I have dinner plans at a nice restaurant. But, honestly, I'm a little out of control again. I went through this in the fall. I bought...

Has anyone else noticed that clearly speaking and doing things intentionally is liberating because it helps combat the feeling of depression and a sense of hopelessness? Let me share a little more: in my experience, when those who have tried to project a hidden agenda that is obviously not aligned with integrity and well-being, it's best to be firm and speak clearly from self-awareness and...

I would say to keep going to the Y and keep trying. Be open to make small talk where you go. Say hello to people you pass on the street. Find events to go to, lots of free things at local parks. Especially as spring and summer comes!
Gentle hugs
You said at the end of your post that you don't dwell in the past, but honey, that is exactly what you are doing. The past is over, don't look back and start building on what you have in the here and now. It's up to you to take that important step and start talking to people and the "Y" is a great place to start. Volunteering is another one.
I own a Mobile Home and I love it. It may not be much, but it's mine. It's not what we have in our lives, what's important is WHO we have in our lives. Trust me, I have been going through hell the past few months and if it wasn't for my family here on DS, I would have fallen apart by now. Here is a quote for you hon.
1. You can spend minutes, hours, days, or even weeks over-analyzing about what went wrong, ruminating about what could of, or should have happened ; or you can stop driving yourself crazy and learn to accept it. Know in your heart, that's how you're going to heal and move on. B. Nicole
