I know that some of the members on here, also struggle with alcoholism. I just drained my bank account, and I have no money left. I'm on my last bottle. It's been awhile since this last happened. The last time this happened I got so depressed I seriously considered purchasing a gun. (PLEASE don't misconstrue that as being current. No 5150 for me, thanks!) I can handle the physical symptoms. They're painful, but I can deal with the hyperventilating, the vomiting, the shaking. I CAN'T deal with the depression when it hits. I'm already getting agitated and depressed at the thought of being sober later. If you don't struggle with substance abuse, I'm sure you can apply this to something similar with your depression. When my depression hits later, I know it's going to hit hard. I don't know how to manage it. (I'm begging you not to say "pray" or AA. Thanks.)

If alcohol has cause all this distress in your life, you will have to ask yourself what it will take to get clean long term. That might mean throwing yourself into a 30 or 90 day treatment program. I know you probably don't want to hear that, but extreme addictions require extreme measures to battle them.

I've considered it, but I don't see how it's going to help. I've been in-and-out of rehab for years. I know I sound like I'm looking for somebody to give me a solution...but I'm not. I'm simply asking for people to share their personal experiences or ideas. But yes, I'm considering it.

Well I have been sober for almost 6 years, but it took desperately not wanting to lose everything in my life. I was about to lose my family, my job, and possibly my life because I was suicidal. Actually once I got sober, it surprisingly got easier over a short period of time. Today I don't have any desire to drink alcohol, and my life has greatly improved in many ways. It's really hard at first, but anything worth doing usually isn't easy.

I would think that since alcohol is a depressant you would feel less depressed once you got sober. Anyway, I can relate to addiction. Mine is food.

You're an alcoholic, been in and out of rehab and can't stop.drinking and you're worried about what you're going to do when the DEPRESSION hits???!!! Worry about what you are going to do to stay clean. My brother was only 49 years old when he died an alcoholic. One of his many counselors asked him-"Do you want to live, or do you want to die"?? It's that simple. I'll never forget those words. Don't wind up like he did. You are fighting for your life.

Ok, I can share a personal experience. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself, "You've got to stop this, it's stupid, and you're going to die from it." I was drinking a pint of vodka and 6 pack of tall old milwaulkees at the time. I stopped and I was already a whacked out, depressed person with or without the alcohol. I had a friend who had had 3 dui's at that point and shared some of his group therapy info with me and one thing stuck in my head: he said that you need to find something else to replace the empty vacuum space that the habit left behind after quitting. So, for me, it was easy because I always liked to be outside all my life, so I picked up on hiking and gardening. Still sober, started January 28, 2001, and only slipped once in 2008 during a high school reunion. I don't even think about it anymore. No cravings and a handle on depression with other things.

I'm not trying to tell anyone what to say to me. I don't need the brainwashing Christianity or the countless "go to AA" spiels. None of that. I expected support. Not to be bashed. Especially considering I have nowhere else to go.
My Uncle died an alcoholic at 49-years-old too. I'm sorry to hear about your Brother. Quite frankly...I give zero cares about my physical health. It's the depression that really kills me. I'd rather be physically put through the wringer, than have to deal with any sort of emotion.

Thank you, and no one is bashing you. Having lived through it with my brother was of course not an easy thing to watch. Ok so no AA and no religion. We respect that. I'm sure you have good reasons why. Then a long term rehab center. You will be counseled on not only alcoholism but all your other issues, including depression. May I ask how old you are?
