Millionwishes's post about her exam brought back an old memory. In first grade, we were learning numbers and addition. They gave us handouts and worksheets. So, we take a quiz, turn it in and the next thing I know my teacher wants a conference with my parents. Why? Did I do that badly? No, I got a 70%. No, it was because of my "9" I had copied it as I saw it on the worksheets and handout, the way it appears on my keyboard ,with the angled slant. No, I was supposed to do it with a straight line. Ok, I was a kid, but this logic I just didn't get. If you didn't want me to do it that way, why give me sheets with the "9" that way? That turned off to math for the rest of the year. The next year, In 2nd grade, I was doing long division, which my father taught me, and using the slanted "9". I didn't use the straight "9" until I took drafting classes, where I learned to what I called the g "9" since that's what it looked like. Still, to make a big matter of something small when there were larger matters

My excuse was that they always showed a curved 9 on Sesame Street.
I remember being in kindergarden and yelling at my teacher, "No, YOU are wrong!"
This totally made my day.
Guess this is another fight i gotta fight. What more can i handle???
Seriously, *WHAT* was that teacher's problem??? Someone needed a smack upside their head w/ a clue by four!
I would actually wait until Sesame Street came on and I would drag my parents in front of it.

It is not my fault that the creators of written language made the letter 9 look like a fucking g. People just later decided get rid of the curve so it would no longer resemble a g. YOU CAN NOT CHANGE WRITTEN LANGUAGE!

Think about it: We are told one thing, and taught the other i.e. "Just Say No to Drugs" then no matter what ails us, we are told to take drugs. However if a child takes Tylenol to school for headaches, if caught, will be punished for taking drugs to school.
I was helping my nephew with an algebra problem, I showed him how to work it out, and got the correct answer. He told me it was wrong, because I didn't get the answer the way his teacher taught it. The answer was the same, but you HAVE TO DO IT MY WAY or it's WRONG.
I taught new officers in the field. The first thing I told them was to forget what they have been taught in school, because now they were in the real world. If I told them to go from point A to point B. I didn't care how they got there, going over, around, or though, as long as they got to point B, they did the job required.
We no longer teach our young to think for themselves, just do what you have been told and don't ask questions.
I was lucky, most of my teachers focused on getting the right answer. There were exceptions, but most of the time I was told why I had to use a very specific method.
For example, in algebra there is a trick called "completing the square". It is a "brute force" method that is very handy when the equation is messy. But the only way to learn how to use it is to start using it on easy equations.
But as for slant versus straight nines, sheese teachers, pick your battles. If the number is clearly discernible as a "9" what is the problem?
