A year ago I was seriously disturbed over an unfair event in my life and reacted poorly. That reaction made matters worse and I found myself over $4K in debt.
I recognized my failure and asked God to forgive me and help me to recover. I prayed for four thousand dollars.
Then out of nowhere I received a debit card in the mail from the State Tax Commission for $4317.00!!!!! I had not filed a claim for a refund: AMOF I paid several hundred dollars in state taxes, and I did not conspire to defraud in any way, but I did claim the money. It was a giftan answered prayer Besides that, the year before THE STATE had allowed an uninsured driver to file bankruptcy to avoid paying me for damages in a collision.
Now the state is sending me threatening notices to repay that money PLUS INTEREST AND PENALTIES. I have not responded because I want to keep that communication door closed as long as possible.
It is apparent to me that someone in that office made a mistake. I may at some point have to repay the original amount, but I do not feel I should be puni$hed because someone else fucked up.
What do you think? Remember that I am receiving therapy for depression. I have told my therapist about the debit card, but not the threats.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmon

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....
They'll screw us over any way they can. Only solution is to trust that God has your back.

I am so sorry this has happened to you.
If you have spent the money in good faith, believing it was truly yours, then your lawyer can write them a letter claiming estoppal.
But if you knew at the time it was not right, that there had been a mistake, and that you should not have spent it, then you should contact them, and make arrangements to refund the money. Estoppal is only for funds spent in good faith.
if you contact them you can arrange some kind of time payment. If they have to take you to court you will have court fees, and probably some kind of 'pay now' thing.
So go talk to the lawyer as a first move. Talk it through, figure it out. Don't ignore it: it won't go away, it will only grow in the dark.
I would say you need to contact them and make some kind of plan on this....I also do not think they should collect the interest...it wasn't your fault that they gave away money you did not deserve....but you do yes have to pay it back as their error has been caught...
