In a perfect world, everyone would have their financial (as well as emotional) needs provided for.

I think that's the goal of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet in Star Trek. The only catch (and there's always a catch): You get drafted into Starfleet, have to serve on a starship, and risk getting blown up by the Klingons.

Starfleet does NOT draft personnel. It's all voluntary. Look at Sisko's dad -- he owns his own restaurant on Earth and was never in Starfleet. Otherwise, I agree with you.
