DONT ASK.
Why do people seem to expect a positive reply when they bounce up to you and say How are you?!!! No one knows what kind of day the other person is having; especially when they dont even know each other.
I work in a small liquor store and for most of the month of March I was consumed with worry and anxiety over my daughters terminal illness, just waiting for that call, and trying to keep busy. When customers came in I would greet them and they would always say How are you?
I would often try to ignore the question, and they would say it again, louder. The third time I would say I am not well then they would want to know why and I would say My daughter is dying or I buried my daughter this week
2 people out of about 200 gave me a hug. The rest acted like I had insulted them,.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

People who love and care for us do want to know "how you are" They can be told the truth.
My customers who ask ....Tell a white lie "fine thanks!"
After all lets face it, they dont really want to know, they are just being polite.
Save your emotions and honesty for those who care : )
When you are at work you have to lie and say you're fine. Telling the truth will turn it all into a nightmare and at least if you pretend to be okay you can pretend to be happy for a few minutes.
Usually I'm fine; as in Fidgety, Insecure, Neurotic and Edgy. :)
yup this question is common as is how are you doing? Like they want to know....and for while when I was sick in head to me how are you doing meant are you getting any sex? LOL I just couldn't handle that question at that time...I was not doing anyone! LOL I would have been doing really well if she was a bombshell blonde babe! LOL
I am ready to take his box of ashes to the bank if they ever give me trouble again about his accounts.
Also at a job we are expected to be professional and act a certain way. Not an easy thing to do in your situation.
They don't mean anything rude by it, but I understand your sensitivity at this time when it is asked. I've said 'you want the truth or the polite answer' - or sometimes I have said - you just don't want to know.
It's hard when people around you are happy and greet you with a big smile, at a time when your drowning in your own tears. I get it. And, I do care.
