in australia they call it "eggy bread"
while slightly more appropriate, the name sounds slightly less appealing.
they are not quite like pancakes with squares in them.. although the recipe is strikingly similar, and can turn out to be virtually the same when prepared by someone who does not know the proper waffle-making technique.
When preparing waffle batter it is vital that one adds a larger amount of flour and a smaller amount of water/milk, uses double the egg(s) called for in a regular pancake recipe, and "whips" the batter rather than simply mixing with a spoon.
