Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I feel selfish for being depressed and cutting. There are so many people who have had it worse than me, I have trauma from my past but I was never abused or anything like that but I feel so stupid for complaining about how I feel when others feel worse. It makes me feel stupid I guess.

Just because there are people who have it worse than us, does not mean we aren't allowed to have bad days or be depressed. You are not selfish for feeling what you feel. The cutting on the other hand is a separate issue and there are plenty of ways to deal with your emotions rather than harming yourself and know that there is a ton of people on here that are willing to help you and talk to you. I'm new on here just today and I'm already receiving help. Message me if you want to talk :)

Your feelings are valid regardless if you have had it better or worse. Comparing yourself against someone else will only make things harder for you. Cutting is a coping mechanism, not the healthiest. You can become addicted to it. I advise seeking alternative and healthier alternatives to managing your depression. Have you tried therapy and/or medication. Taking care of yourself is not selfish and neither is allowing yourself to feel emotions. Depression is an illness and needs treatment. Please don't feel alone because there are so many of us out there. I used to punish myself because I felt so wrong and guilty. There is a better way I promise.

@noelle513 It takes a lot of courage to face yourself. Keep it up. I know people who have overcome cutting and you can too. You will get there.

Your feelings are totally valid. Someone once told me that not allowing yourself to be sad because others have it worse is like not allowing yourself to be happy because others have it better. Your pain is real and I'm sorry you're going through this. I wasn't abused physically ever but I am still fighting, like everyone else, to address my self harm tendencies. Don't ever feel like your pain is downplayed! We're all in this battle of life together and all of us are hoping you can find your happiness!

Your suffering is no more or less significant than anybody else's so I suggest you stop comparing your lot with another in any way, yours is unique just as the next persons is. Depression by it's nature is a selfish condition but it is a valid one also, nobody wants to experience it but for most it is unavoidable. Can you remember how long ago and for what reason you became depressed?
