Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I just joined the site today. I am in search of support from others who may be going through what I am. I suffer from depression and its been extremely hard for me. I don't like the idea of modern medication so I stopped going to see the psychatrist. I felt like I was just wasting her time by her prescribing me meds that I wasnt going to take. I also feel like I should stop counseling or try my best to switch counselors because I don't feel I am getting anything out of that either. I would prefer a therapist with the same ethnic background as me. However, I don't have the best insurance to be picky. I dont feel motivated to do anything, lately Ive just been forcing myself to even get out of bed.

Just thought I would join this group now that I am a widower. My wife passed away May 28th. She was "The Wind Beneath My Wings". When I met her, I was a drunken, dope smoking, fighting, hell raising biker. She told me if I could get rid of the inner storm within me, that I could be a blessing to people. God placed her in my path to stop me. I have been drug and alcohol free now for 53...

My husband and I got our foster license last month, after 3 years of hard work (we had to start over multiple times due to family dramas and Mom's open heart surgery). We spent a year preparing the whole house, guest rooms, and children's bathroom for older kids of 7 yr old and up. Then we got a call that we have been approved to receive twin newborn premies. What, what?!! Babies!? Premies?!...

Sometimes we have a crisis of confidence, and sometimes that makes us want to quit our job, leave our family, stop talking to our friends, etc etc. Quit our meds, walk out on the counsellor.
But I do have to wonder, if you look at this rationally, how does a sudden rejection of your medication and counselling benefit you, when you clearly still have depression? If you had been going to cure of it without assistance, you would have cured of it without assistance already.
Sometimes professionals put us on a journey and no, we don't know where we're going. And no, we don't know what the journey will involve. But we still nevertheless just have to go along for the ride, and see what it has to offer.
How long had you been getting counselling? Do you dislike your counsellor? You should be free to find one who is a good personality fit with you. If they don't understand your cultural limits, you need one who can.
It took me a long time to find the right counsellor, and a lot of patience. But when I found him he was worth his weight in gold.
Don't let the setbacks make you stop the journey. And be very careful about those meds. You need chemical stability. You can't make good decisions when you have hamstrung your brain so go back on a lower dose of the meds, and taper off slowly if you have the time for the instability it will cause, and you feel that it's time to stop. But they might take a couple of years for you to come right on them, so maybe give them the 2 yrs, and then slowly, carefully taper off then?
Depression is dark waters and storms of which no one else can relate to but only those that have swam in those seas. I remember running out and feeding the critters and I had to force myself to go out side. I also curled up and watched the same dvd's over and over, in fact the only time I felt ok was when I should have been totally shit faced and yet I made it through. I fought the numbness by getting numb and staying that way. I slept at all hours and felt nothing but unrest and harmful to myself so to keep all that at bay I just numbed up more.
Now I would not suggest to anyone to do what I did as it is caustic and quite frankly there is a real chance of death. death to ones self and death to those around you because in that much turmoil no one thinks clearly and harm is ever so close.
Do I know how I got where I was when I first arrived here at DS? NO, in all honesty to this day I can't say what lead to what. All I know is I was awake for about 4 days and nights and wound up with a barrel in my mouth. And, no I was not doing any drugs that would keep one awake which is why I was caught off guard. In fact I wasn't doing any thing but my same old same of a quart of beer a day. Same thing I had been doing for years. Did I sleep after I started the Vodka and pills, no. In fact maybe I slept ten hours in two weeks and then, why then I could or would not leave the house. There was nothing that could make me go out that bedroom door other than animals needed to be fed and if I wasn't doing that I was curled up doing the zombie thing.
You see this depression affects every one differently and there is no one solution cures all and I think its because we all address it differently according to our life experiences. And then there is the support. My support consisted of those here at DS and a family that knew as much as I did which amounted to nothing. But as a family all we could do was just bear the brunt and live each day as it unfolded.
