Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Does anyone else ever get really anxious when people/strangers start to ask too many questions? I try to be pretty private about my family life, as it's very dysfunctional. People can sometimes get the gist that something is off in life my as they are talking to me, and are able to connect the dots that something is amiss. It is. Still none of their business though. My mental illness and family dysfunction I'm just not open about. The place where I get my haircut has what's called "silent services," and I might use those again. Basically it's where you just don't talk and they cut the hair. The lady was cutting my hair and she started to get inquisitive as she realized that I was spending celebrating Mother's Day today instead of tomorrow. There is a reason for that. The rest of my family is incredibly violent so I no longer spend it with everyone else. She started to pry and I wasn't about to give an explanation.
The discussion went on and I think she simply felt pressured to talk. I didn't want to. I just was tired, she was asking all of these questions about my going back for my master's and she asked how my family felt and how I felt not telling them. This isn't therapy. They actually don't know...again...coercive control and domestic violence. It started to be too much. I could feel my anxiety just climbing to the point of exploding. I simply said I didn't want to talk about it and was so relieved when we dropped the subject. I mean, what am I supposed to say? "there is so much coercive control, stalking, etc. going on, that my crazy-ass father will try to sabotage all my plans if he finds out...just like he did the whole rest of my life?" My therapist said to keep my plans under wraps from my family. Too much talk for a haircut. I think I might do the silent service, I am trying to get out of oversharing and trauma dumping with people in general. It's not helpful for me or anyone else. I really think there is this expectation in society to be "on" and to be talking all of the time. It just isn't necessary.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmon

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I often tell people that I appreciate their interest but that “that’s not a subject I’m comfortable talking about.” and then follow it up with a question about them.
It sets a boundary in a nice but clear way, and by changing the subject and focusing on the other person, takes the focus off of you
