I am not possessed by the desire to have kids even though the general consensus is it is something everyone should try at least once. Why do some older people feel as though they are a failure if they don't have kids? There are many on here who have kids and if they're honest will tell you, it is hard and sometimes they regret it. Also, if you have more than one kid, it is even harder. We have all had sibling rivalries, unless we were an only child. I spent the evening yesterday with a friend and her two-year-old son, I don't hate kids. Actually, I love them. I love all people. You don't have to share my genes. I aspire to be a great aunt. I read a book once that was a mother confiding that sometimes it gets hard, and you could really use another adult to show some interest in you, in your child, and that is what I intend to do. And to spend the rest of the time having fun with my friends and lovers. Does anyone else out there feel the same?
At the same time I respect that you don't feel the desire to have children of your own. You will be a great Aunt to the children in your life.
Its a reflection of a society that determines a woman's worth by who she marries and when she bears children. Its a longstanding measure of validation which torments a lot of older women who become too old to bear children. When you tell someone your age, the first thing most will ask is do you have children. Its the way this life is and if someone feels like a failure they shouldn't be ashamed of feeling that way either.
