Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Feeling pretty low just now, can't stop obsessing about death, my own, my girlfriend, my parents....feel like nothing is permanent and everything is transient (which to be fair it is!) I can't rationalise things in my head on an intellectual level and I can't stop thinking about it and it really hurts, been to the doctors and have been put on amitriptyline which is helping me sleep and I'm going to arrange counselling this week.
What I'm asking is, has anyone else felt this way and have they managed to get over it, I don't know if this is part of me or my illness (or both)

I definitely obsess about things at times, and it can get to where it makes my anxiety really bad. I'm doing better for the most part, but I still have bad days. I'm not on meds now, have been in the past. Counseling has been very helpful for me along with making sure I get enough sleep, meditate, and exercise, etc. I do think the counseling can help with these kind of thoughts though, it helps you to see what is rational and how to deal with them when they are bad. For me though my anxiety is part of who I am, but I've learned to live with it and handle it differently then in the past. Good luck with the counseling.

Thanks, I've had other obsessions in the past which were mostly sorted through counselling but with this one I can't see the trees for the woods...I thought I'd be stronger following the counselling it's just a bit overwhelming when this hit me about two weeks ago...

Did something trigger it 2 weeks ago?

When I've been at my worst I have felt this way. With the right meds and help I've gotten over it. Make sure you get counselling that's the most important part that will help you through this. Hang in there this to shall pass.

Thanks for the response guys, nothing really happened a couple of weeks back, but I've been pretty stressed at work and my uncle passed away the week before Xmas...pretty obvious that I would be obsessing about death but I wasn't really close to him...funny how when you write it down it starts to make sense...
chelle37
Yeah, it definitely makes sense. I think it's very helpful for me to write things out. Are you keeping a journal at all?

You're doing all the right things (meds and counseling). I've obsessed about my death, too. It's part of depression.

When I am low I really do catastrophise things regarding death and used to be too scared to talk about it until recently. I have been through counselling and have been shown some mindfullness techniques as well as how to write my senaio s down and then retionalise them by asking myself what is ther likelihood of it actually happening x Please let me know if I can help you

Thanks for the response everyone, I'm not keeping a jurnal just now, though I might give it a go soon, it's reassuring to know that others have felt this way and got over it...my main fear is that I feel this way for the rest of my life...the meds seem to have blunted me a bit and made me drowsy, this makes it more difficult for me to focus and think rationally, hopefully this will pass...
