My friend's son just turned 18 and is now refusing help. What, if any, rights does his mother have to get him help. He's refusing to go to counseling and will not take his meds anymore. He sleeps all day and then is up at night. Will not go to school. He's a senior in high school. I am worried about him. Since he's 18 is there any legal way she can make him go?

Hi I noticed from your profile that you live in Ohio. I'm from New York and we have Kendra's Law which says that certain mentally ill individuals can be made to obtain treatment if they seem to be unable to survive in the community without the treatment. I would check your state's website to see if there is a similar law on the books. It also would not hurt for your friend to consult a lawyer to find out what her legal rights are.

Anyone from Ohio who can help me? Still trying to find out about the law. I got on line and wasn't able to find anything about the rights of a parent of an 18 year old who refuses help. I don't know if he is a harm to himself or others, however. All I know is that the advice I got from someone (outside of this forum), is...if this adult child refuses help...the mom can basically kick him out. I was told that sometimes this works. Sometimes the adult child reacts violently and has to be hauled off by the police. I don't want something like that to happen to him. He's still so young. What a harsh world we live in. How about a law that gives a parent more power so she can help him? I need to find out more. Any help, other than what was suggested, would be appreciated. There must be an alternative. Thanks!

I live in West Virginia and we have a "Mental Hygiene Warrant" that is available to family and/or friends that forces people to get treatment. These warrants are available through our county Magistrate Court System.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus).
