hey all - it's doug (one of the DS founders).

just wanted to give you a heads up that we made some small changes to the site tonight...biggest one (we hope) is that the discussion pages should load much, much faster when you're reading and posting messages.

more cool stuff to come, but wanted to give y'all a heads up.

hmm , how about the ads moving to the right and making it harder to read the discussion - was that a change or an unexpected bug? :/

re: the ads...we moved them for a few reasons:

1) in all honesty, nobody creates ads that are as narrow as the left column anymore, so we had to put em somewhere.

2) there are a few studies on the web that say that reading all the way across a page is actually harder than shorter lines, so we were hoping to help make it somewhat easier to read discussions.

that said, the pages are definitely longer now, and we'll look into ways to tighten things up a bit.

i guess 2) is a balancing act, probably best to get more opinions but i personally find the current width that can only fit about 10 words (about 5 when adding comments) a bit clastrophobic.

just a suggestion re 1)- how about widening the left column?

honestly, i appreciate the suggestions. we're going to take a hard look at redesigning all of discussions in the coming months...this was a short-term bandaid, and i apologize for any inconvenience. it's very hard to widen the left column, as that column contains all of your "My" navigation at the top.

i hear you loud and clear, and will discuss with the others on the team in the AM.

The change is ok, but my problem now it that when sending a message to someone there doesn't seem to be enough room in the box and one letter on the left of every line gets cut off. Kinda hard to make sure you are not making mystakes etc.

I agree the new configuration is a little annoying and the ads are very distracting (and dont make me want to check them out any further)
Well done for making the discussions load fast thought, that's a real improvement. Much appreciated.
