Wow, the saying "You learn something new every day" sure hit home for me on Friday. I went to see a potential Doc to replace my Primary care giver. He started telling me about this genetic testing that tells them which psycotropic meds are best for an individual. No more guessing and trial and error with meds.
They just swab your cheeks with a large q-tip, mail it in to the company who designed this test, and 36 hrs later they have the results. Amazing to say the least.
Medicare or Medicaid patients the cost is free. For private insurances the cost varies.
I can't post a url on here but I urge everyone to Google -Genesight- and talk to your doctor about it. It is only for Psyc meds.

Here's the problem with this type of "Prescribe by genetic testing", eventually the FDA, CDC will become enthralled with this type of testing as it may alleviate some of the wasteful spending on unused medications.
The problem is, say you get your results, you take the meds you are genetically supposed to take, and they don't work....since you were supposed to genetically matched to these meds, whether they be psych meds, or narcotics, etc. tough, that's all you get, because the genetic test said so and your Insurance Company isn't going to allow a medication that you weren't matched to. And the average person cannot afford to buy these types of meds with cash.
Herein lies the danger in futuristic medication prescribing taken out of the hands of the physician.
