themselves to get so low. its out of your control though.
karma is a bitch.
I don't support executing addicts, or anyone else for that matter. There is the capacity in every human for redemption, and sorrow for one's mistakes. That's why I'm against the death penalty: you never know when someone will finally be able to help themselves and attempt to make reparations.
Beastie, calling the cops on your cousin is the right thing to do. They can give him the help he needs. But you all might want to try not to write him out of your lives.
It's really hard--my brother is a recovering addict, and he only got treatment after bankrupting both me and mother (and out of her entire retirement savings, too) and going to jail twice--and I won't blame you if you feel you can't. But my brother says that the only reason that he hasn't relapsed is because my mother and I never turned our backs on him.
If was a terrible time in our lives, but he is now clean for 14 months, and if it means that he has his life together now, I do not hold against him the pain that he caused us.
I don't support the death penalty, but not because I think a serial murderer-rapist is redeemable, but because there is always that margin for error and I can't support the possibility of executing innocent people. If there were some way to guarantee infallibility in the legal system I'd be of the opinion we should execute every serial killer, rapist and child molester out there!
Back to Beastie's cousin - if he has been an addict for 25+ years and has never once bothered to try to come clean... I've gotta side with her on this one and say "f*ck him." It's sad and harsh, but there is no point in trying to help someone who doesn't want help - especially if that person is just going to continue to cause pain and suffering in the family's life. There are children to worry about - they don't need some meth head uncle or cousin in their lives.
