Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
So I'm new here. I guess what's ultimately made me to decide to find a support group is my addiction to marijuana. I know there are arguments for the use of marijuana, but I know in my heart that God wants me to stay away from it. I have been using it off and on for the past 20 years since I first discovered it. I have many fond memories that go along with using it, and I know I equate its use with happiness. However, being a young professional with a spouse and children, it is no longer appropriate for me to use. When I have it I use on a daily basis, even before work. I am smart enough to know that the real reason I always turn back to it is depression. And I know I am depressed because I basically have no relationship with my parents. My husband and children and few close friends I have are amazing. But aside from them I feel completely alone. I have no support group. No firm foundation of a loving family. Despite how well I am doing in my life, I often have anxiety and depression and very little self esteem because I feel like I have no background. When I was young I thought my family was ok. But probably around 8 or 9 I realized there was something wrong. My dad was always angry. He is undiagnosed, but I am sure he is bipolar and manic depressive. Because of him being how he is, my mom is depressed and anxious. I barely have a relationship with either of them because of my dads anger and negativity. In the winter I feel worse about it. The past 2 weeks or so I feel like I can burst into tears at any moment. I try to make good choices, and I hope to avoid drugs or alcohol instead of using them to deal with my feelings and lack of parental involvement. How do I move on from this? Are there loving people out there that want to "adopt" a 34 year old? lol. I'm sick of being so upset over something that I cannot fix. Help?

It's National Doughnut Day!Which three would you like? (never mind the calories, fat, or sugar content; just go with what you would pick if none of that mattered and whatever health issues you might have that would keep you from eating one in real life can be cast aside for this exercise as well... have at it!)

sorry your having such a hard time right now. You say you think your father is undiagnosed BiPolar because of his anger outbursts. First of BiPolar Disorder and Manic Depression are the same thing. they just updated the name as science became more technical and positive labeling. Second Anger outbursts or Uncontrolled Anger are not really key symptoms of BiPolar Disorder. There are many more Symptoms he'd have to have in order to be diagnosed BiPolar. He could simply have an anger problem that needs management.
As for you, I would not let your parents issues stop you from getting the help that you need. There are AA and NA classes that could help you with your Addictions. Smoking Pot is a lot more dangerous than people realize. People who smoke daily have a 3% chance of developing a Mental Illness, i.e. a Major Mood Disorder or Psychotic Disorder. Hopefully you'll go to one of the NA or AA programs and get the help you need to stop using the Marijuana.
Take care,
Kat
