Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I highly agree with sadsheri. With meds, better behavior, without meds worse behavior. Guess I need to go to med school to figure that out? I don't think so.
ON THE OTHER HAND, it is VERY possible and even likely that a married depressed person needs medication and ALSO needs marriage counseling accompanied by his wife. That is not beyond the realm of possibility.
It is ALSO possible that a therapist with certain certifications can and often makes diagnoses and is dead on, .. that marriage counseling would do MORE for him (and indirectly his wife) than medication alone ever will and the end justifies the means.
If medication won't "cure" his depression but simply keeps him a "good boy" but marriage counseling will CURE the depression and thereby allow him to be a "good boy" then the therapist has a point.
What I am trying to say is the therapist, with his training may have concluded that medication is a "band aid" and therapy on the marriage (marriage counseling) is what is actually needed to have the greater effect.
Let me try it this way. Patient has "problems". Goes on medication and there is SOME positive effect, but the real solution to ultimate psychiatric recovery is marriage counseling. Start patient on marriage counseling but the effect of medication actually interferes with the progress marriage counseling can have. So, .. take patient off medication and put him on marriage counseling. Whew, .. hard to explain.
This could very well be the therapist's strategy. The therapist may feel marriage counseling IS the key but would not be as effective if husband is on medication. Just thinking.
One way to "find out" is to talk to the therapist. You also have the lattitude to talk to another provider. The thing is, we don't know what therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists are actually doing in their treatment protocol. AND, it may defeat the purpose for them to even tell us. Guess it is a "God I hope I'm right" decision. My 20 cents worth.
I wonder what's up with this? I want to be so much more than I'm being in the world. I've heard the norapanefrin serotonin idea.
But when I take those drugs it just makes me feel stiill depressed,
but very agitated and wired. I'm still working with a doc.
