Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
We can hardly expect better. We're lucky if we have a house to sleep in. So let's look to tomorrow and make sure we don't screw that up while we're crying over yesterday.
But depression? Depression is vulnerability. It's neediness. it's wanting to be understood, it's all sorts of intense emotions coupled with no emotions at all. It's entirely self-absorbed. When you find yourself alone is when you change, because you have nobody to prove anything to, nobody to impress. Nobody left to lean on - and nothing left to lose.
You can throw off your baggage and just get going. Who cares what happened yesterday: will you lose your job today? Better work your arse off then. Who cares what happened to you last year - will you be living under a bridge come retirement? Better work your arse off then.
Got a flat tire? Who cares if you're depressed, you'd better fix it or you won't get on the road again.
Depression gets shoved into its little box when you have to be self reliant. I'm sorry if that's mean and not understanding but it's true. you can't afford depression when you have to survive. So you have to kick it in the chops and tell it to fuck off. Yes, of course you still have the emotions. No, of course you can't indulge them.
And that changes you. And strengthens you. And makes you realise how powerful you actually are, and you gain self respect, and then you lose the depression for real.
Because the truth is we are meant to grow out of needing environmental support to self support. And we can't hold people hostage.
We're adults when we realize people can leave and we don't see this as being abandoned. We learn to let go and stand on our own.
