Its interesting in the past couple years Desipramine (brand name Norpramin in the US) has been studied most for depression in the elderly, chronic pain, Irritable bowel syndrome and ADHD in adults. I think the conventional wisdom based on meta-analyses (analysis of many published studies together) is that the tricyclics are equivalent in efficacy to the SNRIs (Effexor) and slightly better than the SSRIs but with more side effects. It sounds like youve run the course of other classes of drugs so it may make sense...and Im not a psychiatrist...have you EVERY had remission of your depression? Have they made sure there is no manic component to your depression? Hang in there...keep us posted...I would love to see you improve in the next couple weeks.

Hi Dr. O and thank you for responding to my post. Yes, I have had remission of my depression but for only short periods of time. I did inquire as to mania or bipolar with more depressive times and not many manic times. The answer comes back as no. My psychiatrist is beginning to believe the reason I have these periods of meds working and then stopping is that my body is metabolizing them so quickly that they don\'t last in my system or no longer become effective. I am having a blood level test taken on Friday and that should answer the question of metabolism of meds. From there, not sure where we will go. Right now I\'m just getting myself through each day one at a time until some answers are divuldged either in my improved state of being or results of the level of desipramine in my blood. I\'ll keep you posted.
