Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
the op would then have to think gee i live with an alcholic therefore I will become one. totally not true.
I wish I knew how to be stronger and could stop hurting people around me...
"Major depressive disorder (MDD) (also known as recurrent depressive disorder, clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression, or unipolar disorder) is a mental disorder characterized by an all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and by loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities"
Low mood, sadness etc are symptomatic of depression and certainly prolonged periods of feeling like that are hallmarks of depression.
I agree with many of your points on other posts - that major depression is certainly biologically caused and beyond many peoples control especially without medication, therapy, exercise etc. However, I don't agree that "major depression" is entirely separate from circumstance and situation - I do not know which is a cause and which is a symptom. But I think that's another topic and don't want to derail this thread...
I don't think they are trying to say it is catching like a cold.
The scenario described above echos co-dependency.
Best to you.
