Yeah, I have wondered if that was where the train came off the tracks for me, too. I know stress amplified everything, but the hormone imbalance from the thyroid not doing it's job may have started it all.

I have had depression forever and I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto also about 6 months ago. Hashimoto is an autoimmune disorder and does not relate to depression too much. Did they put you on something like Levothyroxin? Will be on it for the rest of my life. I have several autoimmune disorders so if you have one your more prone to develop more but no one knows what or which one may come next. Another one that I have is vitiligo, which is loss of skin pigment in the skin and it grows with sunlight. Makes me more prone to skin cancer because the pigment protects the skin and now I have almost none. Have had that for alot of years too. Hope this helps.

One of the symptoms of Hashitomo' disease is depression.
Treatment for Hashitomo is thyroid medication.

Depression is depression. You may be lucky in that the simple treatment of Hashitomo's may very well also cure the depression.

I am not a doctor, but this would make sense. You can confirm this by asking your doctor.

terh - My mom has hashi/hypo and she also has vitiligo too. Thank you for all your replies. I didn't know that one autoimmune disorder makes you more prone to others. Thank you for that tidbit of information. My doctor told me that I will need to go to him for blood work and ultrasound every 6 months and that I need to get a biopsy (I have 3 nodules on my thyroid) every year. He is out of town right now so I am just waiting on him to get back into town to write out my prescription. Thats how new the diagnosis is to me. I can't wait to see if and what medications I will need. I would love to feel stable for the first time in a long time. I've dealt with a lot of stress this year and I read that stress and thyroid imbalances are connected..sigh..such is life! Once again thank you for your responses!!

Hi, I was dx with Hashimoto when I was 4 and I have been on thyroxine since I was 4 (now 30) Thyroxine is the generic of synthroid by the way.

I have a ton of medical problems ranging from fibromyalgia, ovarian failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, athritis, and the list goes on and on, so since I have much more going on, I'm not sure I am the best one to speak to b/c all my symptoms sometimes blend. But I can tell you you should be monitored at least every six months getting blood tests to see if your dosage should be changed. (And btw the generics are available at Target for $4 if money is an issue)

hey i have hatomot..(sp) hypothyroid, and i also have major depression, i think for me, i got depressed from the tiredness and achyness of this disease, i think that you need to treat both. it is hard to say if that causes depression, but i have been depressed since i had it,so i would say, maybe an antidepressant with synthroid, might help you, but i think first you want to make sure you are on the right dose of synthroid.because that can be tricky, make sure your doctor checks your levels frequently for a least a year, and gets you on the right dose. depression is a symtom of hypothyroid, sorry can;t say the other one, i also have learning disorders.
