We have had very few Humming Birds this year. Maybe do to the late spring and summer.. I have only seen two at my house..
Yesterday afternoon I went out on my back porch and Velcro, my cat, was tossing something in the air so I went to check it out.. He had caught and killed a little humming bird.. Made me so very sad.. The other humming bird was flying around looking for her mate... Damn cat... Its a good thing I love him.. I was so sad and mad at the same time... Just sayin...

I used to feed the birds every year, but all the cats in my neighborhood would lie in wait under or near the feeder................
Eventually, I figured I was hurting more than I was helping the little birds.
But now I have A Little chipmunk living in my yard.......................
At least he was alive yesterday. Not so sure about today :-) ;-)

Very sorry about the hummingbird, they're so beautiful. :(
He is a little monster, but so proud of hisself... love em to pieces.. I just hate the presents.. Especially this wonderful hummingbird... so sad.. I have to have a burial...

I think that if you hang bird feeders up high enough you can make them mostly cat proof. Squirrels also like to frequent bird feeders, they too like seeds. I've seen some really funny videos of the lengths to which squirrels will go to get to the seed, and the lengths to which humans will go to squirrel proof their bird feeders!
We put a small fountain in our back yard. The birds love it, and sine doing that we have had very few tomato worms in the garden! The cat manages to catch a bird only once every few weeks, so I think ours is a net positive bird area.
Sorry for the hummingbird. I shall say a prayer for it.
