Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Hey all,
My name is June, I've been here on DS for 4 years for various issues but I haven't reached out to the depression group until now. I've had depression and bad anxiety as long as I can remember so it's really just become a part of my life that I learned to deal with.
Lately I've been going through these phases during every term where I start out strong and happy to be going to college, (I love school it's the best thing I've ever done), but by the end of the term I am worn out and spend days in bed skipping classes for a week or 2 and barely finding the energy to wash dishes. A lot of this has been precipitated by ill health, I've been anemic and suffering from other issues that has kind of sapped my energy for the last year, but I also think I am losing hope.
When I was 19, (in 2010), my baby died from a cord accident when I was 9 1/2 months pregnant and this caused a serious downward spiral in my life, I had cut out the majority of friends and family when I got pregnant because I wanted to keep toxic things, (drugs, crime, crazy people), away from my new family so when my baby died I had no support system and I kind of went completely inward and stopped wanting to be around people or even go anywhere, even going to parties or family functions sounds excruciating at times, although other times I enjoy it.
I really just want to be happy again!! I'm so tired of being sick and tired, and I feel like I need a new start and new friends, because this whole "I hate the world and I'm not going to talk to anyone" isn't working. Right now I am on my 4th day of laying around, I spent every day last week with my niece and nephew and it made me very happy, but they live 35 miles away so I can't go every day and now all I want to do is sleep all the time.
Does anyone have any advice on motivation, books, websites or anything to help me stop hating life?
(P.S. I've tried many antidepressants. and group therapy as well as one on one, none of which helped except Ativan which my new doc won't prescribe).

Do you think anxiety is genetic or comes from your environment? What are your thoughts?

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

Unfortunately, I don't have much advice. But someone on here, once told me something that I'm going to share with you. If you can't get out of bed, do it anyway. That in itself, is an accomplishment. If you can manage that, then start setting small tasks for yourself, each day. I usually set household chores, for myself. Laundry, dishes, etc. Those are also accomplishments. I got up and vaccumed today and I felt better. It's hard to get up the motivation to do these things, but you usually feel better, once you've done them.
As for the anxiety, a lot of people have told me to add, Adventure Guide as a friend, on here. I hear, she has a lot of posts in her journal, on how to overcome anxiety. I've added her, but haven't gotten around to checking out her journal, yet. That's something that might be beneficial, for you too. It definitely couldn't hurt.
If you miss a week of college - for most people, that would cause them to fail, or lower their grade significantly. Your primary doctor can do lab work and tell you what things you're low in. Several B vitamins, Vitamin D, and other vitamins can affect depression, along with other things. And exercise is very helpful - a Pinterest quote, "I'd rather be depressed than exercise.' My sentiments totally, regarding exercise when I have knee pain or I'm feeling down, even though it's proven to help.
Whether you are religious or not, one of my favorite people to listen
to, is Joel Osteen. Most of what he says is inspiring, hopeful and
very relatable.
I hope things are much better for you soon, and that you can begin
to have more energy and peace.
As you have already seen, you can get the advise you need on here. You know how it works. Keep posting until you meet people in this group that are a good fit for you, that you can relate to.
You have had to deal with some major issues. I know their are others who have gone or are going through the same thing. Hang in there at please keep posting. Many hugs!
As for a self help book g Feeling Good by David Burns is helpful to me.
For inspiration, I like to read books or watch movies about people who have overcome loss, drug addiction, or other terrible odds. I recently read Cat Daddy by Jackson Galaxy. He's a cat behaviorist with a show on Animal Planet. Anyway, I was surprised to learn that his work with cats in shelters pretty much saved him from a life of addiction. I want to read I am Malala next (the girl who got shot by the Taliban).
When you read about the terrible hardships that others face you don't feel as alone and you feel that strength is possible.
