Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Okay so this may sound totally stupid but I'm going to ask anyway. Is a suicidal thought a suicidal thought even if you'd never ever ever ever ever carry through with it although these thoughts keep coming. Because I have sooooo much to live for just that I've been really stressed out lately and I know for the life of me I'd NEVER commit suicide. Just I'm on anti-depressants and like I said, insanely stressed. I've been a cutter since November and just the thoughts are scary. So I wanted to ask on here before I went and told someone (my therapists or school counselors) because like I said, is it just thoughts I shouldn't sorry about or should I tell a professional?

If you think about you'd be better off dead or committing suicide I think it is probably considered a suicidal thought. I've battled with these thoughts off and on (with no plans) and my doctor and therapist are aware of it. I think it's always best to make sure a professional is aware and take any necessary steps to make sure you don't attempt it. Better to be safe than sorry. Also, sometimes anti-depressants can cause these thoughts so it is better your doctor is aware in case you need a meds change. But these thoughts are not uncommon with depression.

I agree with BlueYonderDreams. It's better safe than sorry and it can be a side-effect from the anti-depressants. I also have these kinds of thoughts from time to time. Even if you don't think you're serious about actually acting on any of them it still means something that you're having them at all.

I would definitely tell someone - they need to know so they can help you more etc, as it can start with thoughts and progress so they'll want to keep an eye on those 'thoughts' with you. Also it can be good to talk these things out.

the longer you keep it in the worse it can get please talk to a councilor!

a suicidal thought doesnt have to be urgent and violent like "i want to kill myself", it can be something that seems benign like "i would rather not be alive just now", but it is still scary, and a suicidal thought, something that should be taken very seriously. all the advice above is good, let your therapists/counselors know you have been feeling this low and definitely ask yr doctor about getting different medication!

Yes, I think that is what they call suicidal idealization. I do that too. I think about it but know I won't do anything because I love my family and I don't have life insurance. I don't want to leave that burden on anyone if I don't have to. I think maybe that is one reason I keep putting it off (buying life insurance). If I had it, my thoughts may just become real..

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...
