Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

You'd think being a 16 year old girl, I wouldn't need so much therapy. Whenever I try talking to friends I hear the same thing: "You're an only child! Your mother is so sweet. You have such a nice house. I would kill to be you." Little do they know that i've grown up with a bipolar mother who puts all the blame onto me, her only child. My one and only ex kept pushing me and touched me without my consent on multiple occasions. My best friend of 9 years had left me. I can still see everything vividly before me.
Beginning with my mother, I was not informed she was bipolar until last year. I knew something was wrong however I was kept in the dark about it. I often tell my grandma and father that you'd think they would have put me in therapy from a young age due to having a bipolar mother. They say that it was due to the fact I never said anything and they didn't think anything happened between us - but things did happen. I was mainly verbally abused and blamed, her only slapping me one time when I was 6 years old. I would be alone in the house with her, so whenever she was angry I would watch as she threw anything in her hand onto the ground. It wasn't until last year that it was directed at me, and badly.
I wasn't feeling well one day. I'm often in bed due to bad period cramps, allergies, and depression. My mother also has OCD, depression, anxiety as well as ADHD. She wanted the entire house cleaned, right that instant. I told her I wasn't feeling well and so she grabbed my ankle and tried yanking me out of bed. She yelled and belittled me and I was terrified so I called my grandmother and spent the night at her place. I talked to her because her house is my only safe place and my mom called trying to "explain her side" by basically saying how horrible I am so my grandmother simply shut her down and hung up. The next day I had a volleyball game and I thought she had calmed down. Well, she was calm, until we went to eat out afterwards. I was with my other grandparents and cousin. After we sat down at the table my mom whispered to me, "What did your other grandmother say to you last night?" I told her we shouldn't talk about this right now and should instead enjoy lunch. Well, that wasn't the answer she wanted as she started trying to grip my phone by clawing at my hands and screaming at me in the middle of the resteraunt. I was mortified and her mother tried to calm her down. My younger cousin started crying as she has bad anxiety and situation stressed her out so once I got out of her grip I took my cousin and we ran outside to get away from her. Eventually my mom left, however that didn't stop her from calling both her mother and me. She was trying to guilt trip me and when my grandmother was trying to protect me, she told her to "go to hell." I called my father and asked if I could spend another night out and my grandmothers so he grabbed extra stuff and brought it to the restaurant. Well, my mother came back still angry. She was yelling and crying at us, pushing my father around and I stayed inside as he and her mother talked to her. That was the end of that weekend.
Then, this past weekend something frustrating happened. I was out at my friends place during a big snow storm and my dad was out working. Because school was cancelled the next day I asked if I could sleepover another night to which she said yes, no problems. Then about two hours later when I'm at the store with my friends she calls me, telling me I'm not allowed to talk. She began to yell at me, saying I was selfish for asking to spend another night with my friends. She said by doing so I would have to give my whole next day to her, I had to do whatever she wanted such as cleaning, schoolwork, anything. She said I was manipulative and couldn't say I wasn't feeling well and had to do anything and everything. Every time I spoke she yelled at me saying I didn't have a right to speak. The next day, while she was better, she said that I "embarrassed" her . . . however she didn't bother to think maybe it was embarassing for me to yell at me in front of my friends.
She is an ultimate control freak and wants to control my grades, any plans I have of the future have to be near her and whenever I go somewhere she expects me to update almost 24/7. She gets defensive easily and I think flat out pretends she isn't bipolar. Shes so focused on looks as well, caring much more about her appearance. Often I feel she doesn't do things just to be nice, but she does it for praise and attention. I'm not allowed to talk to anyone about anything because she doesn't want her image being destroyed but doesn;t bother thinking about changing it. While sure she can be nice, she'll buy stuff for me and we can hang out, it doesn't change the fact she still hurt me and she gets mad if I'm still upset after she apolgizes. She almost expects me to be totally find after a simple "sorry" and maybe a starbucks, but its deeper than that. When I was young she'd tell me I wasnt allowed to tell anyone about things that happened between us, or if she messed up she'd tell me that she does so many nice things for me and I'm so much luckier than other kids and it kinda made my self esteem really bad. I feel like everything I do is wrong to this day.
You see, I had a best friend of nine years. I was always there, I spent all the money I got on her because I just wanted to see her happy. Freshman year she shut me out completely. Whenever I tried talking to her she'd ignore me or end the conversation, she would insult me and make fun of me which hurt a lot. I didn't understand. There was also another girl who I was friends with for about two years that suddenly turned on me freshman year. During 8th grade, she would throw stuff at me and laugh at me to the point I was mumbling. My other two friends followed in as she had that controlling personality. She didn't like me due to the fact that I would speak up if I felt like she was doing something wrong which she did not approve of at all. During a sleepover I ended up going home in the middle of the night crying because of her, but said I just had really bad cramps. I tried making up with her freshman year, we had a talk and hugged. The a few days later when I went up to hug her and she told me "don't fucking touch me." Well, I didn't and we didn't talk since. I mean, I've also never been popular with the girls on my soccer team but that never really bothered me much. Third grade was hard though as the queen bee of the class did not like me at all, therefore whenever a friend came over we couldn't let anyone know and I was left all by myself. She talked about me behind my back which was also not very fun.
Finally, we talk about my ex. It's the last thing I swear. So I liked him for about eight months, and when his girlfriend broke up with him he got together with me. I was blinded a lot. He suffered from depression and other issues and I would always be there for him, however when I told him I was having a rough day and just needed a hug, he would always keep asking to touch me or french kiss. If I let him touch me, he would say "oh you're the best." It made me feel worthless. Even if I kept saying no one day he would touch me and then laugh it off as a joke. Needless to say I broke up with him, and then I found out him and my current new best friend at the time dated. WITHOUT TELLING ME. This wasn't even a month later. It hurt because I thought we were all friends and when I said I was upset he told me to stop being a whiney brat and stop getting upset over something so small. Needless to say, she broke up with him later and now he's asking my two friends for nudes and is basically trying to hop from one girl to another. I wanted to save my first kiss and my first boyfriend/girlfriend for someone special, and that turned out utterly horrible.
Needless to say, I hate highschool and have a lot of doubt in myself and the people around me. I'm working on my confidence and trying to get better, I've been taking my medicine and seeing a therapist however it's still hard.
I just wanted to get that all out.

I guess your friends who say you have it great have been raped by their siblings and beaten by their dad's and their mum's are passed out often from drug addiction
Loads of parents have issues, sounds like your mum would go insane if you escaped her clutches. Let her. She's been trying to dog train you into making her happy. And with some mental health issues no matter what you do that's an impossible task
Are you sixteen now??? Perhaps you can move out??? Moving in with that nice grandmothers of yours sounds good
You'll see just how much power your mother has given to you too ruin her day when you move out, from there you can dog train her to treat you with respect or you will go no contact with her until she can behave again
Sick parents suxs and can cause problems for you, so go get yourself some support
I had a surrogate grandmother that was also my island of security. If mom is not properly diagnosed you need this advocate until you are old enough to have your place.
You are doing things that are right for you. Welcome...( I moved at 16 away from my female parental unit)
Talk to dad and your counselor, and bring this post in a document with you.
Support and understanding ,
J.
You talk about your mother's BiPolar condition, like it's something she can turn off and on at will, like its just some thing she does to make everyone's life hard. Unfortunately it's not the way it works. You need to realize that BiPolar Disorder is a very serious Mental Illness, it makes people act in ways they don't choose to, and don't necessarily want to. Severe mood swings from Depression to Mania can come and go and make it hard to live a normal life, or what's perceived as normal. From what you describe it doesn't sound like your mother has much of a support system for her Disease, and without the proper treatment and support system, being a successful "average good person" can be very difficult. Perhaps you should talk to your Therapist about how BiPolar Disorder works and the way it can make a person act.
Now, having said that, the way your mom treats you and has treated you is not right. Her parenting skills are definitely lacking, and your father should be much more involved that what it sounds like he is. You should have been told at an earlier age about your mom's illness and she should have better treatment in place to help her know how to be a more capable mother. But, you can't change the past, it's done. All you can do is look forward to the future and change things that affect it. Have you considered sitting down with your father and talking to him about the things your mom and you still struggle with so that some things can be put in place to stop the bad behaviors and attention seeking on her part? Once you and your dad talk and discuss things then the both of you can sit with your mother and discuss it with her. Some safety/care provisions can be put in place for when your mom is in a manic state and you feel scared or uncomfortable, i.e. you call your dad and go to a prearranged grandparents house or your dad comes home. Is your mom in Therapy and on Medication for the BiPolar? Your mom has BiPolar and OCD and probably Anxiety, but not Depression or ADHD, those last 2 are wrapped up in the BiPolar. But she needs to be in Treatment for the BiPolar. Perhaps the 2 of you could have conversations to work out your issues in a safe place, like your Therapists office. These are things to think about, fixing the problems, not just throwing out blame and anger....that doesn't fix anything.
As for your "friends", it sounds like your friends were just using you for what they got out of you. The money and stuff you gave them, they just took and weren't really friends in the end. When you make new friends, don't give them stuff, just let it be enough for you to hang out with them, they shouldn't have to have "gifts" from you to. I would suggest trying to meet people that share your interests. Are there any clubs that you're in or some that you might want to join? Meeting people that have common interests are usually a little easier to make friends with. I would recommend that you not spend much time venting about life at home or your mom. Teenagers don't usually make good listeners about other teens problems and they can get turned off from a friendship pretty quick. I would just spend some time trying to meet people and just learning about each other, what you like to do, eat, where you like to go, what you do for fun, etc.
Boys are tough subject for girls your age. I know you want boys to like you and when you get a boyfriend you want to do things that they want to keep them happy. But you are the one who says what that limit is. And you never have to cross a line. If they're going to get mad because you won't let them do things you're not comfortable with, then they're not worth your time. Much like with friends, find a boy that you have interests with and things in common. And if you don't have a boyfriend all the time, it's not a big deal. In High School they come and go, but they're are plenty of them.
Venting and Voicing your concerns and issues are good, I hope that you'll continue to see your Therapist, because with what you have to deal with at home along with your Depression issues, that's an important tool for you to keep using.
I truly hope that you are able to sit down with your dad and work some things out and then the 2 of you can sit down with your mom and get some things in place. I also truly hope that your mom is getting the proper Therapy and Medication Treatment.
I also hope that you come to understand the BiPolar Disorder is a serious Mental Illness Mood Disorder. It rips people apart bouncing them between Manic/Hypomanic highs and Depression lows, up and down with no set schedule, you wake up in the morning and you don't know what to expect for the day.....it's a hellish life to live. Most definitely not an easy one.
I'm 28 years BiPolar w/Severe Suicidal Ideation, I've raised 2 sons, (they're 28 &19) I've been in very structured Therapeutic and Medication Treatment Regimen since the day I was Diagnosed when I was 20. I've had 5 suicide attempts and 5 Involuntary In-Patient Psych Ward stays, my last was a Voluntary stay, before I decided to OD. I was in for 4 months and the Depression had taken over so completely that I finally agreed to do 3 cycles of ECT (Electric Convulsive Therapy) to break through it and get me back to my life. I did ECT every M, W, F of every week for 3 months. It was hell, it put my mind and body through a lot, but it did what it was supposed to do and I got my life back and the death depression was gone.
I'm sure that life with your mom when she's acting out is not fun, and I"m sure you sit in your room at night and wonder, "why the hell did I have to get put in this family?' I'm sure your mom loves you alot. I'm also sure it's probably hard for her to tell you and show you her love in safe, motherly ways.
I truly hope that your Dad steps up and your Therapist steps up and the Adults in your life help you find safe, behavioral ways to communicate with your mom and have her learn to curb her manic behaviors.
Sometimes Journaling can have a very Cathartic effect on the mind and heart. Do you do any type of Journaling? If not starting might be a good idea. You can pick up a little Journal Book anywhere, $General, Michael's, Wall-Mart, the $1 Store might have them. But I would get one and start Journaling your days, it will help you to get all of the hard stuff out of your head and down on paper. Then you have things to talk with your dad about and your Therapist.
Take care and hopefully things get better for you at home soon.

Now ... it gets REALLY complicated. I am going to speak straight to the point.
You are an abused child. In order to stop the abuse, the Court needs to step in. THEN, it gets more complicated ... because the COURT will determine your Mother's competence. If they determine she is unfit, they will 'do something about it' .... which basically means Foster Care ... or at least appointing a suitable 'guardian'. Your entire life would change in ways you could not predict. They MIGHT see to it she gets into EFFECTIVE treatment ... which if success takes place, you would not be 'taken away'. That COULD be a long road.
So .. IN MY OPINION ... two choices:
1. Report the abuse .... to school authorities or the police, or child protective services ... and be ready for the 'wild ride'.
2. Endure all this, ... and get OUT ... which is not a good choice. "Getting out" at 16 is NOT advisable, .. even at 18 ... because for a 'beginner', getting out NEEDS support from parent(s) ... a LOT of support ... and you don't have any at 16.
Personally, .. I think the abuse needs to be reported, and a QUALIFIED family member take guardianship ... and Mom has to leave the picture until she can prove to the COURT she is competent. At some point, even a restraining order may come into place .... which would be handled by Child Protective Services.
I am sorry, ... you are the VICTIM of your Mother's mental illness. You bare NO GUILT. NONE.
Finally, ... GUYS in your age group have NO IDEA how to treat a romantic partner. GUYS far above your age group who show an 'interest' are likely up to NO GOOD. This is why a 16 year old girl (today) will probably get hurt .... BADLY ... in a "too intense' romantic relationship .... of ANY kind. You are WAY too vulnerable. I would hope you get a stabilized life away from your Mother and date .... JUST DATE .... a number of 'guys' ... and don't put out ANYTHING to any of them. After you are ... oh ... in your early 20's ... then ease into something serious.
I am truly thinking of your welfare. I hope you will consider my advice. You are in a pretty dire situation ... and I hope you can get out of it.
