Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Praying for you bro.
In my childhood I learned resentment. I resented the person who spent hundreds of hours trying to shame me for things they imagined I did, for things I did do, and things they did but wanted to blame me for. I didn't learn shame. I learned resentment.
As I grew older I noticed that I'm *not* motivated by the things others around me are. This made it hard because all the things I *should* want and all the things other people wanted did not bring me any joy or any peace. It certainly didn't put money in my pocket. (I won't go into how I frustrated my bosses without trying. What do you do with an employee you can't motivate?) I was a buffet for more people like my childhood abuser. And it made me very, very aware even more that I was a jumbo peg person in a pinhole peg world.
I can go for hours about how different I was from everyone else. How my 'friends' weren't really my friends. (Not imagined, but true per the number of conversations I overheard when they didn't know I was there.) And how often I got screwed. I got screwed a lot. Adding to it was the rounds of small, simple things falling apart. Especially in those times it felt like the universe was once more out to get me.
(I once heard someone say that there are people even the outcasts don't notice. That was me!)
A few years ago the resentment I felt at every one else for their triumphs, successes and joys turned on myself. It bought a huge wave of anger with it. Because it was obvious that the only person to blame for having such a screwed up life was me. There was something in me broken.
As it turns out, no. There wasn't something in me fundamentally broken. There is nothing in me fundamentally broken. I'm simply *not* motivated by what other people want. Once I accepted that about myself it put a huge chink in the self resentment/anger/hate that had swallowed me up.
We have a very homogenized society. If you don't fit with whatever the in-thing is now, if you don't want that latest toy, than the automatic assumption is that there is something wrong and you're at fault, you're to blame. Reality is the exact opposite is true. It's an easy thing to understand in print, but a whole different ballgame when I began to apply that understanding to myself.
So I could go on for hours and hours about things that can be done and perspectives and all that stuff. I won't. Jormungandr, I'll save that for later for when we know each other more and you don't get bored with my novel writing. I look forward to reading through your future posts and getting to know you better. Maybe I can be of help to you on some things. Or maybe I can be a friend.
:)
