Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Now.. as to your actual problem.... there is a lot of things that you can do for yourself to stay calm while you are searching for the help you need. Try to keep things in perspective, and remind yourself that what is happening in you right now is not the end of the world and that you can and will get through it.
I know that oftentimes it gets overwhelming and you feel as if the only hope you have is medication and a psych ward... but this is not necessarily so. Obviously, if you think that this is what you need, you should continue seeking the help you need.. but you even mentioned in your post that you think you might be being extreme with this - that suggests to me that to some degree you feel that you overexaggerate.. whether this is true or not, I do not know, only you can answer that... but obviously if you suspect yourself of overreacting you have some degree of reality testing going on, which is a good thing. You are keeping your issue in perspective and reminding yourself that it is not the most horrible thing you have ever dealt with / will deal with. Good.
With the level of self awareness that you are displaying, I personally think that what you might find more useful than medication and a psych ward is a good series of sessions of talk therapy. If there are any community health clinic in your area I would suggest going there to seek help.. they offer all sorts of professional help to suit the specific need of their clients. You will be able to find the most appropriate type of therapeutic approach for you.. which, in my opinion, based on what I have noted from your post, would probably be some form of cognitive-behavioural therapy. Many people are not quite ready to take on the responsibility that comes along with that type of therapy, but I suspect that you are. I think you have reached a point of maturity where you will be able to handle putting in the effort necessary to make that type of therapy successful,.
Hope you find what you are looking for... keep on keepin on :)
Where are you, USA or UK, or elswhere?
As already adviced, if in UK call NHS Direct

Sorry they didn't give you more time talking to the doctor, but make sure as you get things sorted, that you always communicate to your providers and make them listen...ask them if they heard you, stuff like that.
Best of luck and PEACE.
