Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
You can always try my favorite...
I like it because it's absolutely not a lie...just a bit of sugarcoating: You don't feel very well. Accurate, right? If they assume you have a cold instead of anxiety issues, well, that's their assumption.
The only reason I would suggest that you do go is to support your mom if she is grieving. If you believe she really needs your support, then try to go. If it is only to make an appearance, then do not feel obligated.
It is understandable that you may not be able to go due to the distance. If you do not have any real ties to the family, there is really no need to go, especially if you have other obligations.
Maybe take yourself out of the equation a a little bit and remember that there are some of your relatives that suffered a loss. Find way to pay your respects without having to deal with the dysfunctional situation. If you do nothing, you may regret it later.
Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle with your mom. Be gentle with your dad. Deaths of relatives bring out the best or worst in people.
Maybe reaching out to your father to acknowledge his loss might spark a conversation. If not you do not have to go any further.
Good Luck. Hugs
