I have been told by my therpist that I am depressed and that it is time to try some meds. My H was is a registered sex offender with 2 felony charges. We had a great life before this happened. Although we had a sucky sex life for years. He won't leave the house. I lost my job 2 years ago and work PT jobs to help pay the bills. He lost his job and then took money out of retiremtn to buy into a business that makes no money. We are looking to divorce this year and we will use a mediator.

I started on Lexapro 5mg about 6 days ago. I feel funky and don't like it. I was actually starting to feel better before I started on this. I di have some set backs, and I almost never have dark thoughts anymore.

I wondered if anyone else has taken lexapro. I get freaked when I read the blogs, espeically the withdrawals as I do not plan on making this a long term thing if I even stick with it. In fact I would already like to stop it and keep trying on my own.I do not like feeling "funky in the head". I hate dizziness more than anything else.

Any suggestions??

Welcome to DS, I'm glad you've found this group! As far as advice goes, it's hard to say what's right for another person when it comes to meds. I think the approach with meds that is helpful to me is that you can try it and always get off it if it doesn't feel right to you. The side effects may go away after you've been on it a while longer. Have you shared your concerns with your dr or therapist? What made you want to try the meds, was it something you wanted to do or did you feel pressured by your therapist?

Hi, welcome to DS!

I took Lexapro for awhile and liked it, didn't have major side effects. A number of the anti-depressants make you feel a little weird at first but those side effects go away.

I don't remember the withdrawals from that particular drug ... I've been on a lot of different ones and some were really uncomfortable to get off of. But if you don't take it for a long time, you might not have an unpleasant experience.

Welcome to the cuckoo's nest. I am one of those who did not just fly over. I came, and I stayed. Best thing I did for myself in quite some time. Lots of support here. I bet somebody will be able to talk to you about lexapro. Was not my med. I was on celexa, wellbutrin, effexor, zoloft, and a s- - - load of other stuff. I am in remission from depression, and off of all meds for about two years now. Keep coming back!!!

Didnt read the other replies, sorry if i repeat anything...
I was diagnosed with major depression and ptsd when i was 15
I went through every medication out there (excluding anything that came out in the last 3 years)..and lexapro was one..i dont remember the effects other than that it didnt help. Wasnt till 3 or so years ago that finally i found that what worked for me was abilify.
Rule of thumb..always give the meds at least 3 to 4 weeks to kick in fully, this will vary from med to med doc should tell you how long.if by then your still having undesirable side effects a its not helping, ask to try a different one id say dont giveup, but.it sounds like your mind is already made up...

I agree with chick. for me it was 4 weeks before the drug started working. One other thing to try if the drug doesn't work after week 4 is to have teh docs measure the level in your blood stream. For me I got a little benefit after four weeks, but the doc thought it should be more. He measured my blood levels and found that the med was lower than expected ( just meant that i had a world class liver that was clearing the drug from my system faster than normal :) ) . So he upped the dose adn I felt much better.

Welcome to the group! It does take a little while for your body to get use to the meds. I have taken it before and it just didn't work for me. I have been on meds that made me feel foggy and dizzy and that feeling went away. If it doesn't ease up I would talk to my dr about it
