Depression Supporters Support Group
This community is dedicated to spouses, children, relatives, co-workers and others who are actively supporting someone suffering from depression or other serious mental illness. Depression can bring about intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive, which can have a grave impact on the ability of others trying to help.
i am laying alone in bed again silent tears running down my face. I no longer know what to do or how to cope so I find myself opening up to strangers who may understand what I'm going through. My boyfriend suffers from depression, sever depression. Since we met nearly a year ago I suspected it but it has only magnified, and developed into a beast shadowing both of us during, becoming unbearable. When it first showed its ugly head I asked him if he would consider getting help, he said sure- but as its worsened he truly believes he isn't worth help- it would be better given to someone else who "deserves it". I am no stranger to this beast of a disease- I grew up with a mother who suffered with high-functioning depression. This was scary because she was so good at hiding it, it escalated to unbearable levels before we would notice. My dad is a godsend and my parents are an amazing example of a loving partnership. He got her help intime- but once it came close and she ended up institutionalised for a few weeks. I'll never forget how nonshallont she came into my room once home, crawled into bed with me and proceeded to tell me about the rope she purchased to hange herself with. I now find myself in a relationship, in a different country over 3,000 miles and 5 hours time zone away from my rock solid support system. My boyfriend is threatening he wished he had the guts to kill himself and as soon as he does he'll be gone and I just have to get over it. He is convinced he has no friends, no one who cares or would even miss him. He plys himself with alcohol to cope except the occasional evening where I beg him not to. I know he needs help. When he gets like this it's almost trance like his voice changes, his mannerisms, he gets angry and it bloody terrifies me. Tonight I got him to come into the bedroom and I kept smiling and holding his hand and reassuring him until after he passed out on the floor near the bed. At least when I can hear his snoring I know he's alive. This is something I heard my dad say about my mother when I was a teenaged and I hate that I know what he meant. I know I can not live like this. It would be one thing if he were trying to help himself I would be by his side but this route of self destruction is not something I can watch. He gets so mean, picking fights with me twisting my words until he has another validation of how he's a "horrible person". For Christmas he is making my dreams come true and taking me for a long weekend in Italy- I am prays while we are away he will be able to clear his head enough for me to speak with him. How do I get him the help he needs? What can I say to him to convince him to go to get hep. I've asked before, I've made it about me, I've threatened him saying if he doesn't get help I'll leave him (I know not my most proud moment). Help. Please, God. Someone help him and please give me the strength to guide him to anything that wwill help him see the beautiful man I fell in love with. Thank you all for existing and lending your strength by reading my post. I love you all.

The rest of us have circumstances that make it difficult to leave a spouse but a stupid boyfriend? I wish I had tough advise like this before I got sucked into the never ending black hole of some one elses crap. This is the best advise you will ever receive. People don't change. They get worse.....
NJ400- what happens if I decide it's best for me to leave my partner and he goes through with committing suicide. While I do appreciate your blunt advice, I need to make the decision to stay or leave in healthier times not when he needs me most.
I wish I knew about this disease 12 years ago when I was 24!!! We can't fix them, and you will waste your life doing so. Good Luck. You know in your heart what is best
NJ400 is not being mean, but you guys do not understand what it's like to be married to someone who suffers from either UniPolar Depression or BiPolar Depression. Mental Illness Diseases like these are not curable, meaning they are life long illnesses. Medical illness is diagnosed, treated, and cured; Medical illnesses actually have treatments that make them better. It is entirely different, 2 totally different worlds.
There is a very big difference between a boyfriend and a husband. Because with a boyfriend, yes you can still make the decision that this is not the right relationship.
Once you're married and have kids, life gets very hard, very fast. When your husband can't hold a job because he's depressed, when he can't help around the house, because he's depressed, when he doesn't interact/discipline/build a relationship with his kids, because he's depressed......YOU, the wife, your life then becomes a living hell. You have to work and make the money, you have to do all the chores and repairs around the house, you have to take care of the kids, as if you were a single parent, YOU have to do everything, because he won't help, he's too depressed. How long do you think it takes to begin to hate the man you love because you come home each day after working all day, the house is trashed, you have to deal with the kids, help them with homework, you have to get dinner going, and he's laying in the bed, exactly where he was when you left that morning. How long do you think it will take to resent him because he refuses to see a Therapist, refuses to take medication, (because it makes him feel funny)basically refuses to get any treatment.
See, these are the hard questions that you guys don't think about, you don't think to ask yourself them and see what your answer is. Because if you think it's hard now with your boyfriend, with marriage they get worse, the daily stress of a marriage and responsibility make the Depression worse. When kids come along it makes the Depression once again worse.
So, y'all need to put a lot of thought into your relationships and make sure they're something that you want to take on long term, make sure you understand exactly what you're signing up for.
Take care,
kat
I won't say to leave him but I love the response that is above mine. Do not sacrifice your life and stay with him because you think that if you leave him, he will end his life. That is a huge weight to bear that you do not need to.
