How to deal with my anxiety re suicidal thoughts
Hi all - this is the very first time that I am attempting to find help online. But I have reached the point in my relationship that I have hit rock-bottom and not sure how to manage and take care of the situation anymore. My wife and I have been married for 13 years, but we have been together for almost 25 years. I know her extremely well and almost have the ability to identify her major depressive episode before she does. Some background to our situation. We do not have any kids and she quit her job in January as she could no longer cope with the demands. The major depressive episode culminated in the second week of January. At this point she not only had suicidal thoughts, but have actually made the plans to commit suicide. I was traveling for work and fortunately arrived home earlier than what she was anticipating. I am sure that had I not arrived when I did she would gone ahead with it. It took plenty of pleading, crying and begging to convince her to accompany me to our GP as she was adamant that there was nothing he could do for her. I also think in her mind she had decided that ending it all was for the best for all parties. The doctor immediately adjusted her medication to Wellbutrin 300mg XL per day. Prior to this she was on Prohexal 40 mg per day. The Wellbutrin is complemented by 100mg Molipaxin at night. My spouse has never believed in the value of seeing a psychologist. I have managed to convince her to go and see a psychologist - which she reluctantly agreed to on condition that I accompany her to every session. We have been for two sessions to date, but it is still a struggle to convince/motivate her to go to these sessions as she does not believe this will help at all. Due to her current state of mind, we have isolated ourselves from all of our friends and families as she does not want to portray an image of somebody losing it. Its almost like she's ashamed of the disease and cannot understand why she cannot "pull up her socks" and deal with the situation. Her current state of mind is one of lacklustre - she does not do a lot and due to her "compromised" state of mind, I am constantly weary of not putting too much pressure on her or expecting too much. She has aluded to the fact that at this point I am her guardian angel - as I shield her from everything she doesn't want to cope with. This type of action could include changing topics in a conversation when it is starting to move into an area that I now is stressful for her. My job requires me to travel extensively and there are many weeks where I am not home 3 - 4 days. I have noticed that during these times she falls back into old habits, i.e. not getting dressed, staying in our bedroom all day long, and no communication. On my return though it looks like she makes an effort to get dress and perhaps participate in tasks around the home. In the last two sessions at the psychologist I had the feeling that I was doing all of the talking on her behalf - almost like being the mediator between the therapist and my spouse. This role that I am portraying has been my "job" for a number of years now - ensurnig plain sailing for my spouse. All of this to ensure that she is not faced with anything that could trigger an episode. I now need to start traveling extensively again, but constantly find myself anxious about what she is doing when I am away, trying to check-up on her cleverly so that she does not feel like I am spying. The thing that frazzles my nerves the most is if I cannot reach her - my mind immediately jumps to the worse case scenario. I apologise for my rambling, but I don't think I have ever mentioned any of this to anybody else before. Is there anyone out there that has any sage advice on how to deal with this current situation. How do I learn to trust again? More importantly can I trust again or should I be on the look out for any form of suicidal tendencies. Any help in this regard will truly be greatly appreciated.
