Cathy, I am trying to do some research for you on this. I thought you said your Dad was on Namenda and something else but if not you may want to see if he could be. This is from the rxlist website:

"A fifth drug, memantine (Namenda), is also approved for use in the United States. Unlike other drugs for AD, which affect acetylcholine levels, memantine works by regulating the activity of a neurotransmitter called glutamate that plays a role in learning and memory. Glutamate activity is often disrupted in AD. Because this drug works differently from cholinesterase inhibitors, combining memantine with other AD drugs may be more effective than any single therapy. One controlled clinical trial found that patients receiving donepezil plus memantine had better cognition and other functions than patients receiving donepezil alone."

The other drugs they mention for dementia are: tacrine (Cognex), donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Reminyl).

All I can add is that my mom is on both Namenda and Exelon...the combination is working ok, she is not getting better but I know it is slowing the progress. Thinking of you

My Dad who`s 90 and I am living withcomplains and does not comply with medicines. He stopped his Aricept by himself but his heart Dr. gave him Nemenda. He usually complains about all meds but it`s been 5 days and no complaints. At least unlike the patch he was putting on himself because he can be very stubborn this Namenda pill he keeps in the kitchen and its a starter kit, very clear for 4 weeks . I pray it helps him.
