Degeneration of the intervertebral disc, which is often called "degenerative disc disease" (DDD) of the spine, DDD is in fact a condition that can be painful and can greatly affect the quality of one's life. While disc degeneration is not a normal part of aging and for most people is not a problem, for certain individuals a degenerated disc can cause severe constant...
last physical had me at 5' 11'' that's 1 1/2 inches shorter than I used to be. 1/4 per disc.

When I was measured at the same gynecologists's office that I was measured at my true height 9 years before, the technician said I was 5'4 which nobody had ever said before,so at first I thought there must be something wrong with their measuring device, but about 5 months later I was measured as 5'4 at a totally different doctor's office, and then I knew that I had shrunk.I also started to get mild lower back pain not nong afterwards, and I thought that I was getting Osteoporosis,so I asked my doctor for a prescription for a Dexa Scan and it showed that I had some bone loss.
About 9 months later I went to see an orthopedic doctor who didn't practice surgery anymore and I told him about my loss of height and mild lower back pain and I showed him the Dexa scan, and he said it doesn't say that I have any marked bone loss and he took an X-Ray and said I have Degenerative Disc Disease and that it's very common and most people have it and he said that it's like Arthritis in the spine.
And he said the reason that I'm shorter is because my disc is being pressed down from the DDD and I asked him if my back pain was going to get worse and if I was going to loss more height and he said likely yes and sadly he was right about both things.I had asked what I can do about this and he said nothing, there is nothing you can do to treat or prevent it,but I know you can do something to about the pain.
6 Years after I first learned that I had lost a half of inch of height, I tried on a pair of very good jeans that I had never tried on after they were hemmed 3 years before, and when they were hemmed it was 3 years after I learned that I was now 5'4,when I tried them on for the first time, they were too long and at first I thought they didn't hem them right, but then I thought oh no I bet I lost even more height. Sure enough about 2 weeks later, I was weighed and measured at a doctors office as a new patient, and I was now 5'3 and a 1.2! All of ny average length pants are too long now,so is a full length winter coat I bought many years ago,and I was actually weighed and measured the same day I then bought this coat.
I was very lucky to have reached 5'4 and a 1/2 since my mother was only 5'2 and my older sister was the one that was always 5'3.
I went to my regular now former internal medicine doctor and I asked him for a prescription for a new MRI,and this MRI showed the diffuse DDD,but now my bulging discs were worse and not just mild, I now have Spinal Stenosis, and a Sequestered Disc, which means that a piece of my disc broke off! I fell 6 times,5 times in my house the first time right after I got this condition I fell on my hard bathroom floor while using both legs to get off the toilet, and once on the pavement steps right after I came back from the emergency room, and I had been using a cane getting out my father's car who took me.
I couldn't even walk for 2 months without a walker only in my own place to get to my bathroom, and out of my bed because my left thigh, which is the side the piece of disc broke off,was so weak that I couldn't even lean on it without falling down, I had to have a nurse, nurses aid and a physical therapist come to my home for a few months and I can walk again but it's difficult and I have sharp back pain off and on.My left thigh was very sore for the first 2 months also but that's gone.
