I had my DVT on 3/4/13. Recently my leg has been swelling and is hot. This hasn't happened within the last six months. I switched from Coumadin to Xarelto 4 months ago.
Last week I went to the doctor due to the swelling leg. He immediately sent me to the hospital for a doppler and nuclear scan on my lungs. His concern was that the Xarelto wasn't working and I could have a DVT.
There is no sign of a DVT in the leg and they compared the scan from a year ago and it indicated it has healed. He was very pleased with the results as it indicated no scarring. The nuclear scan came back above average. He said that a flap (valve) in my leg was slow with the return and this could be causing the swelling. Whatever this was he was not concerned.
Tonight my leg is throbbing and feels hot. Has anyone experienced this a year after their DVT? The weather has recently changed too. Also, I am due to go off the meds next month but with this swelling back I am scared to death.

Coincidentally, I had just made the switch from Coumadin (which I had been on for roughly 20 years) to Xarelto the month before. Superficial Thrombophletitis can be caused by many different things (not necessarily a blood clot). The thrombophilia specialist I saw did not feel it was due to Xarelto failure (which I had feared initially). The root of the cause was infection (cellulitis) due to dry cracked skin (despite use of skin therapy moisurizers). Two week later i was fine and haven't had an issue since.
Just a thought, this may not be what you are currently experiencing.
