Really sorry to hear about that, but glad you'll be seeing a hema to get checked out.

Where was your INR when you re-clotted? It may be possible to stay in a higher range in the future to avoid more clots. Or, possibly, they'll try one of the newer blood thinners.

Keep us posted and keep your chin up! Hopefully, they'll get this figured out soon.

My levels have always ran around 2.6. One time it was 1.8 but the doctor said that should have being okay. That was a couple weeks ago - I was almost ready to come off warfarin too.

My family doctor is getting a second opinion on the radiologist report because it doesn't say how old this "new" clot is. Could they have missed it on the first doppler? I am wondering because the first tech only did from my knee up. This second one did it from my thigh down to my ankle. The new clot is low behind my knee.

I spoke to a friend who is a genetic nurse and she said they seldom do a second doppler because most radiologist don't know what to make of them.

I know wishful thinking.....

I agree with you friend's assessment. Unless a Venogram was performed during your initial clotting eposide and a subsequent one performed now, rarely do radiologist make accurate diagnosis based solely on the doppler. Could it had been a clot overlooked the first time; yes. Could it be a new clot; less likely but not totally impossible. I'm not a member of the healthcare community, however, the disparity in diagnosis is all too common especially when it comes to what could be a chronic clot (older clot, now a scar in the veins).

And they usually can tell if it's an old clot or a new clot. I do think a second opinion is in order. This all seems sketchy to me. Sure it is possible to clot while on warfarin, but really unusual.

I think it's totally plausible that this is actually an "old" clot which wasn't seen in the first scan. I mean, if this one recently discovered is low in the knee area, and you were first scanned from the knee up I think it would be possible that it just didn't really reach the range of the first scan. I'm glad your doctor is questioning it and getting a second opinion. To me that scenario is a lot more likely than that you got a completely new clot while on warfarin. I mean, the latter scenario is possible, but it's just not very likely. Human error in the first scan to be seems like a much bigger possibility, and there should be some kind of assessment on the general age of the new clot - they should be able to tell whether it formed within a week or so of the scan as opposed to months before. Hope things will work out well for you!!

Hey, I'm on injections forever, you get used to them, it's ok. They're just something you do, and the more you do them, the less bother they are.
And you know there's no way you can re-clot because of food or drug and Warfarin interactions that knock your INR too low, because that can't happen on injections, so I feel ok doing them.

Started the shots. Sucks.
Now I am getting a full work-up for cancer. I guess some people have blood clots when there is a unknown cancer. Has anyone else had this done? I am so upset.

I haven't had the cancer screening done, but I know that's pretty routine over on the PE boards when docs can't figure out what caused the clots. I can only think of one person who ever found anything though, out of all the folks who have been checked. At least they're doing their due diligence, but I wouldn't freak out over cancer just yet.

I am not freaking out too much. I have always being pretty diligent with routine checkups etc.

I still am hoping the first ultrasound missed the "new" clots. I won't even mind losing the money I spent on the Innohep (sp?) if that was the case.
I read on an internet site that dopplers test can't really tell the difference between old and new clots.

I have done 2 shots so far - first one I didn't do a very good job cause it bruised a bit and still hurts. The one today was fine. 88 more to go....

You poke around a bit with the needle until you find a spot that is less sensitive. It worked for me although those Lovenox shots leave alot of bruising no matter what you do.

When my son was admitted to the hospital at age 14 for a DVT the first thing they did was check for cancer - said it was routine. So don't get too upset or worried. He also had a second clot while on warfarin. They say coumadin is better - but it will cost more of course.

It is a scary thing for sure. The shot are very very expensive. Almost a 1000.00 a month. Thank god I have insurance through work and 80% is covered. Still had to cough up almost 200.00. I don't know what I would do if I had to pay the whole amount.
