The following link is to a letter I wrote to my orthapaedic surgeons office to share my DVT/PE experience with them and to see if I can spark some interest in improving their practices around blood clot education and risk assessment.

I'm sharing this now because I'm a little nervous / excited about it today. I have received 2 phone calls so far thanking me for my letter, and the head nurse has asked that I call her back today to discuss it. I don't want to get my hopes up that I'm making a big difference, but I figure that even if a handful of people read the letter, then hopefully those people will at least be a little more aware.

Good for you! Most of us think that doctors are Gods and we think they know everything. They do not. I diagnosed my first blood clot and the very inexperienced doctor, I could tell, did not believe me, neither did the tech who could not find my massive clot either.
I actually sent a letter to the tech who did find my clot and saved my life.
I hope they listen.

By all means doctors "practice" medicine. Nothing is for certain. I had a DVT at age 25 that I got while working out at the gym. Went to doctor and was sent home. 3 or 4 days later, I went back and was rushed to E.R. with a massive clot that by then, had stretched from my groin area to the middle of my calf. I survived and now I have no problem going with my intuition and not just accepting the physicians diagnosis if my body is telling me something different.

Thanks everyone. I called her back like she asked on Wednesday, but I got voicemail and haven't heard back from her yet. I will give her another try later today or Monday. If anything comes of this, I'll be sure to provide an update.

The head nurse finally reached me. Here is the update. She indicated that both the CEO and COO of their organization have read my letter. Their next step is to review it with a larger group and to determine an action plan. One possibility is to use some of the material / approaches they use for total hip/knee replacements for all of their surgeries. She will be back in touch with me in a couple of weeks once they have developed an action plan.

I have to say it feels so good to feel like they are taking my suggestions seriously and that they are taking the time to keep me in the loop. I also let her know that I'm happy to get involved in any way if there is any role for someone outside of their organization.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
