I'm one of those weirdos that they can not attribute anything to me having the DVT, I'm what they call "Idiopathic DVT" which translate to
"we don't know why!!!"
I failed all genetic tests, no none family history and needless to say that the pill was never an issue...

The Dr thinks my clot was due to BC pills, Kariva. I'm having my blood tested in the next couple of day to see if have any clotting factors. Fingers cross tests are negative.

My clot was due to MTHFR and sitting way too long with my legs tucked under a chair at work.

My first issue was diagnosed when I was 20. I developed Phlebitis in my calf. The doctor told me then I developed the Phlebitis because I was a waitress walking on concrete 45+ hours a week. At the time I was very healthy and was not on any type of birth control.
My DVT which developed in December, per the doctor is cause unknown. I have no genetic predisposition, have never had any health issues with blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes. The only possible predisposition is my age and weight. I had not traveled in over a year and I have not smoked in over 20 years. I have never been on birth control nor am I taking any hormone replacement therapy(I am peri-menopausal). I had one healthy pregnancy resulting in my beautiful 18 year old daughter. The DVT is in the same general area as my previous phlebitis episodes.

So for me who knows!

I have had PE's in 2005 and in 2008, no one can figure out why, or where they come from. Birth control has never been an issue and all the genetic testing came back negative. I did have a total knee replacement about 4 months prior to my last clot but again all the tests indicate the clot didn't come from the knee replacement. Besides I was on coumadin for about 3 of those 4 months. LOL my doctor told me I was one of his patients that the term "One in a million" was coined for.

I got mine 3 weeks after giving birth. Haven't had any test done yet to see if there is any other reason I got it.

I was pregnant and pregnancy can make your blood hypercoagulable from the increased estrogen along with what they called a mechanical blockage (the baby laying on my vena cava), slowing my blood return from my legs to my heart. I was also positive for the Lupus anticoagulant antibody when tested after I reclotted several months after being taken off of blood thinners.

Mine was a result of being pregnant, and suffering a fall. The trauma to the leg caused the clot. However, my grandmother died of a clot while pregnant, and I have had cousins with it as well, so will be tested for Leiden V after baby is born.

I never thought about bruises from sports as being more than a bit painful and an eyesore, but it sounds like it could result in a blood clot??

I study karate - taking a break while on coumadin of course. I'm 2 promotions away from black belt; and believe me, there are days when I come out of class pretty banged up.

My clot was definitely caused by teh picc line, but could missing a block on a kick that lands on me, cause a clot?

For the most part, an uncontrolled kick lands on the outside of the thigh. And blocking punches bangs up the lower arm.

My husband and daughter also study karate. He's 1 promotion away from black belt; she's not in adult classes, so the contact is pretty minimal.

But could my husband and I be at risk from this?

Jenn, I suppose a kick can cause bruising and lead to clots, I never really thought about it. Maybe I should because when my dog indicates he has made a find he uses my chest as a springboard to get my attention and to get me to follow him. I have come home many times with 4 paw prints bruised into my chest. Once or twice he has hit me so hard he has literally knocked me down. Now when I see him coming at me full force I brace myself, I also now wear a helmet and a padded vest to protect my chest.

Ferr, smart move getting the protection. I had a moose of a dog when I first got married, who was 125 pounds of muscle and a puppy at heart. He could knock anyone over if he came running at them - he was a great dog.

I think next time I'm at the dr's or on the phone with them, I'll ask about this. The exercise is great for us, but if there's risk of clotting, we can reduce that by wearing some protective gear. It's harder to work on with it on, but hey, small price to pay.
