My son is a 18 years old basket player who got a dvt after an a torn ACL, a ligament in his knee, last january. We are still waiting for an operation and very scared of doing it after the dvt. Have you been operated on the same leg/knee/arm after getting a dvt? What were the special precautions? We are so scared now of him getting another dvt. A doctor told us this morning that his chances are 2-20%, depending on the surveys. I think this is really too much to take a chance...

Are they saying his chances are 2-20% chance of getting another dvt post surgery. I think anyone who has suffered a dvt always has a chance of needing surgery in the future. That being said, there are pre and postoperative things/medicines your provider will prescribe to avoid this from happening. Despite these measures there is no guarantee for anything. Case in point. My husband had knee replacement surgery last year and breezed right through it. This July he had his second knee replaced. Seventeen days post op, despite being on louvenox he had a dvt with multiple pe's. He got up and ambulated immediately and did everything he should have.
Your son may have other things on his side. One being his age. My husband was 58 and diabetic. Sounds like your son is young and healthy. He needs to do all he is told to do post operatively. You can always get a second opinion on those chances. Stay involved on this site and most of all keep yourself educated on the topic of dvt. I wish you and your son well........:)....Lu
