I personally don't think any contraceptive that has progesterone and especially estrogen is completely 100% safe, although those with low progesterone amounts are generally safer. A lot of women take progesterone based birth control after have a PE.

Are you seeing an OBGYN for your birth control questions?

I got my second DVT six weeks after starting a progesterone-only pill, so I'm not at all convinced that the mini-pill is completely safe.

Also, if you read the warnings for cerazette posted online, you'll find that the company itself warns against use by patients who have clots. I found the UK version of the patient information here:

However, even with that info, some ladies do feel comfortable taking the mini-pill. It really depends on why they previously clotted and if they have other reasons for taking the pill. It really is up to you to do your research and decide on what you, personally, are comfortable with.

I finally wound up with the copper IUD (coil, in the UK) that had no hormones at all. I felt like it was a good choice, since both of my DVTs were blamed on birth control.

Yeah, in my mind the only completely safe birth control in terms of those that do not increase your risk of blood clots are those with no hormones.

So to Toss' point, you have to get down to what you're comfortable taking. Do your homework. Don't rely just on your doc's opinion. I see a very good OBGYN and while I'm on warfarin, I still do not want any hormones, although my doc feels the Mirena IUD would be ok. I don't think she thinks that because she doesn't have a clue. I think she's basing it on statics and odds. I'm basing it on why take the chance at all.

I think I'll do some more research as really can't decide what to do. The thing is, I need to use some form of contraception as having another baby right now is not what I want (only giving birth 7 weeks ago)! I will have a look on the link you've given me toss n turn, thanks.

I use the copper IUD (paraguard) as well. I think a lot of people forget an IUD is an option. I'm with RMB. Why take the risk. The copper IUD is good for 10 years, but it can also be removed at any time if you don't like it or if you decide you want to get pregnant.

I love my copper IUD! It can cause your period to be more heavy but I don't have an issue with that. I've had mine for a few years now.
