Just diagnosed with IBD

Hi there, Ive just been diagnosed with colitis - unspecified ( im assuming eventually will be either crohns or ulseratice colitis.i live in the UK.


I have a lot of bleeding and discomfort daily. The sumptoms really get me down and its very early days so still unsure of treatment until I  contacted by the specialist IBD team.


Anyone else been in my position? Any words of wisdom?

Hi this group is pretty quiet but just wanted to reach out and say hi. Have you had a colonoscopy yet or are you being given a preliminary diagnosis based on symptoms?

I know for me, getting a diagnosis was a relief I had been sick for awhile and the not knowing what was going on was really disheartening and scary. Hope you hear something soon so you can start treatment. Don’t let the doctors leave you hanging too long. Be proactive.

Thanks for your response. Ive had a colonoscopy last week and they have said colitis unspecified so they explained that it could be colitis or crohns but th specialist team will be able to clarify once the biopsy results come back. With me its constant bleeding, pain and general discomfort and fatigue all of which has steadily increased through the weeks.
Im still feeling pretty scared of need tor surgery although aware it may not come to that.
Im having nightly anti inflammatory enemas. So far no change at all

Yeah that makes sense. Should have the results soon I hope. I know for me, my GI doc was like 99% sure it was UC after my colonoscopy and started me on meds right away but I had to wait a few days to get the biopsy results and the formal diagnosis and then he had me follow up in the office with him maybe within a few weeks after the scope to see how I was doing. It can take time for any medication to start working.

Hang in there, try to rest and stay hydrated. You will be ok!

I’m so sorry that I haven’t checked this group in a while and missed your post, I hope and pray that the doctors can come up with a treatment plan to give you some relief from the pain, bleeding and fatigue.
The doctors pretty much diagnosed me with UC right after the colonoscopy so your doctor should know something by now and hopefully you’re on your way to feeling better. I hope and pray that you won’t need any surgeries..
Like rmb said, try your best to stay hydrated and get as much rest as possible
