Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. Immodium stops me up completely and causes pain. Literally everything stops where it is and I have to wait for it to wear off. 24 hrs for a BM is considered "normal" (1-2/day) so I wouldn't be too worried. More than 24 hours between BMs can cause toxicity in your digestive tract, but my understanding is it has to be at least 2-3 days and usually much more than that. I don't know what the exact requirements are to cause dangerous toxin levels, so you might want to ask your doctor about it.
Some other OTC items that help some people:
* Aloe Vera pills
* L-Glutamine
* Probiotics (pill form, the store yogurt apparently has things in it that are not very good for UC/CD)
* Multi-vitamin
* Boswellia
* Megazymes Digestive Enzymes
* Cod Liver Oil
* Antioxidants
* Ginger
* Calcium, Vit C, Vit D, Zinc supplements
* Slippery Elm (coats stomach prior to eating)
In the next couple of weeks I'll be starting a new regime with the above listed. I'll keep everyone posted on whether it helps, helps awhile and stops, etc. Got the information from a very nice lady whose son has UC/CD and is doing very well on this plan. It's kind of a modified SCD with natural supplements. Sounds promising, though involved.
:D
I'd like to add a couple items to rmansker's OTC list of suppliments:
* iron sulfate (or another iron suppliment)
* folic acid
* prebiotic (food for the probiotic bacteria)
Anybody taking other OTC's that seem to help?
