Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, and can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract. There is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease, but there are many medical...
It controled my symptoms, I felt like I was in remission for the longest time.
Well; I was wrong =)
I had a colonoscopy done like a month ago and found that I had actually been flaring for a long time.. there was nothing to supress the inflammation so I had a bunch of it in my colon.. plus I had some scar tissue building up.
So from my point of view - diet alone doesn't manage crohn's. Yes - it does manage the symptoms of Crohn's.. but not the inflamation or scar tissue.
I would also love to know what you are doing diet wise that works for you.
When my small intestine is acting up I can't eat much of anything with a fiber matrix and meat of all types are painful. When my colon is problematic fatty foods cause problems. I can't eat dairy at all - even when I'm feeling great.
Sometimes I develop bacterial overgrowth and then I have to cut out sugars, soda, soy, etc.
I manage the variability via carefully logging my food and subsequent symptoms.
Re: controlling inflammation - nutrional therapy alone has been shown to be an effective treament for people with crohn's disease (note: this is not so for UC!). Specifically a liquid diet has been shown to be 'almost' as effective in controlling inflammation as steriods. Per Dr. Fred Saibel MD - author of Crohn's Disease and UC - Everything you Need to Know. Its a good book (probably one of the best I've read) - I highly recommend it.
