Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, and can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract. There is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease, but there are many medical...
Don't lose hope & stay strong! My thoughts are with you both.
It is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.
But there are a lot of different diets, supplements etc out there.
I hope he's feeling better soon.
The hospital told me that you don't usually start seeing results from the Remicade until after the 3rd treatment. But sometimes it takes a bit longer.
Give each thing you try a bit of time before discarding it. But if you can try everything before you opt for surgery. Once his intestines are out they can't go back in.
I really hope that he starts to feel better soon. Many thoughts and prayers are with you both.
Also if he's really not feeling like eating, he might just try drinking Atkins shakes [or Ensure ect.] for a while. That shouldn't bother his system, and he'll still be getting some nutrients.
Don't lose faith. Just keep trying, eventually something will work. Best of luck to you both. I hope your husband is feeling better soon!!
I would also strongly recommend looking into Jini Patel-Thompson's website. She has Crohn's and has specific protocols for times of flare/inflammation.
Hope he is feeling better in the near future. Don't give up trying.
If that's too extreme for you then I suggest nutritious chicken broth (homemade is best) or beef broth. At the very least I suggest doing a gluten-free diet (no bread, pasta, etc) This could help a lot.
Eat meat and good fats (olive oil not canola) and eggs for energy.
Low-fiber is good at this time.
The rest of any diet can wait until he gets out of this very low state. I've been there.
Good luck.
Water, chicken broth, scrambled eggs no more then 2 a day, with as little butter as possible. I would try yogurt but with the least amount of sugar you can find. I use Fage which was the lowest I could find (I think it has 8 grams?) SCD really wants you to make your own.
You could try Dry curd cottage cheese but it's hard to find. I can't remember what else is in the beginning of the SCD diet?
I would definitely ask his GI for a prescription for VSL#3DS.
It's the strongest probiotic you can get. I take mine on an empty stomach with 8 ounces water and wait 20 minutes. This way it's reaching my whole GI tract.
I would also get some georges aloe vera juice and take that on an empty stomach as well. It is soothing. I say Georges because it's the only one that has has the fibrous irritants removed.
As far as food recommendations - read the books, see which makes more sense to you and your husband. Juicing is really, really wonderful. A great way to get nutrients and give the bowel a rest at the same time. I juice at least once a day - apple/kale or carrot/kale. I drink plain (no flavoring) Kefir/banana smoothes. Kefir is a really strong yogurt like drink that can be found at health food stores. Probiotics are good to take, but get a good quality one. Most yogurts that claim to have all the beneficial bacteria really aren't all that great because the sugar in them kills the good bacteria. I eat turkey burger and chicken for protein. Rice is well tolerated. A lot of people can not tolerate wheat/gluten products and dairy is pretty much not tolerated across the board. Avocados are great and well tolerated. It really is individual though, some people can handle certain foods, while others can't. But things like bananas, avocado, rice, poultry, are pretty well tolerated by everyone. I had one dr tell me to avoid anything with "hooves" while in a flare - funny! Also pork should be avoided. I hope things turn around for him. Surgery is an option at least....but I would give the remicade a chance to work and just try hard to get on the right diet, as that will only help the healing process.
