Daughter waiting for diagnosis of IBD?
My 9yo daughter has had reoccurring episodes of abdominal pain and fatigue for the last 4 years! For the last 8 years she has had reoccurring Colds/flus with a weak immune system! She has bowel issues all the time, we thought it was food related so she is following a strict diet eilimating trigger foods of dairy, gluten and eggs! Last summer she had blood in her stool for the first time that lasted a week! So basically for years we have been trying to figure out what is causing her all this pain, bowel issues and Illness and have been to numerous specialists - but no one has been able to help!
In December she got severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea and extreme fatigue that has lasted 3 weeks now...she has seen a gastroenterologist and has a colonoscopy/scope scheduled for January!
All her symptoms seem to line up with IBD but we are waiting to find out! In the meantime ... what can I do to help her? Everytime and anything she eats she just gets pain and has to Eliminate it a little while after, she is exhausted and up at least 3 times a night with urgent diarrhea! Anyone have any suggestions to help her feel better or what steps I can take next?

I would defer to her gastroenterologist for guidance on how to help manage symptoms until she has the colonoscopy. Usually they tell you to eat a “low residue” diet which is basically a low fiber diet. It’s not intended to be permanent and it won’t stop diarrhea associated with active IBD but it is easier on the colon when it’s inflamed so that may help her. Also ask him if he recommends iron supplementation. It can be hard on your gut so some doctors don’t recommend it so to me it’s not something I’d do without her doctor’s ok.
Also when you call the doctors office, ask to speak with a nurse or nurse practitioner vs the receptionist/ medical assistant. I have found them to be unreliable at times.
Sorry I wish I had more help to offer but it’s something that will get sorted out once she has the colonoscopy. Until then, easy to eat foods in small amounts, rest and staying hydrated are sometimes all that can be done until then.
If it gets worse with blood loss and increasing bowler movements call the doctor as well.
Prayers for your daughter
