Unfortunately, every pill I take for my universal UC has warnings for liver function on the label. I've gone through 5 different kinds, though they are worth trying to see if your liver handles them better.

Thanks, I am going to be off all meds for one month to let my liver settle down. In the meantime, My doctor said to try fish oil, which she recommends to all of her patients, funny this is the first she has told me about it and I have been seeing her since Dec. 2010 So, anyway I am going probiotic, fish oil the flavored liquid and something called Revital1X ( Intestinal Revjvenation Formula. I hope this works,
The Doctor told me about a shot I would take once a week after my liver settled down. I asked when I could stop it and she said when I didn't have a colon. Pretty much a bummer, hence the reason I am going to give the health food store a chance this one month.

I have been on Culturelle the whole time I've had this, and I'm planning to take fish oil more consistently. I have high hopes for it helping, and be sure to let me know how it works for you.

I had elevated liver enzymes a while back and found out it was high due to having a cold - to which I'd been taking Day-Quil and Night-Quil for nearly 2-weeks... I came back down but I had to stop taking everything even vitamins for a while... Fish oil huh? Never heard about this... I will need to read more - let me know what it does for you...

I think MP6 is the alternative for Azithioprine. Although I'm not sure about the side effects. Thanks for the tip on fish oil. I give it to my dog every day but never thought of taking it myself. Hope you feel better soon.

robincrocker is right. I was on Azathioprine and had crippling nausea and headaches from it. They then switched me to 6MP (mercaptopurine generic or Purinethol brand name) and the side effects were far more bearable. All I've had on this one is occasional nausea and slight hair thinning. I am not sure about using it as an alternative in terms of the liver problems, though. It is a different drug, but similar enough that if you are having problems with one you may have problems with the other. The next step if these drugs don't work for you would probably be to try humera (assuming you've already tried the milder drugs like Asacol and Lialda without success.) Like Joereader says, however, all the meds that I've been on have had warnings... I guess the good news is that most of the possible side effects are a heck of a lot better than having hives on your intestines :-/

Thanks everybody for the imput. It is so good to know that there are others on this crazy roller coaster ride called UC.

My GI at first recommended fish oil, but later said that some studies came out that it was not as helpful for IBD as previously thought but that I might want to continue with it since there are other benefits. So I still take it every day but I can't say it has had an overwhelming affect on helping with my UC.

It's unfortunate that there's no magic bullet pill that helps everyone, all the time, with little side effects. I'm fortunate that I've had great results with Azathioprine. Every once in a while, I'll have slightly elevated liver enzymes but usually it's because of illness, and my gallbladder had been really messed up for a while so that was causing liver issues as well.

My main hope was for it to tone down some side effects and improve general health a little. My main worry was whether or not it caused more gas and therefore more bloating/cramping. That's gotten so bad before that it caused heavy bleeding without ever having any BMs.

every single medication is bad bad bad for your liver...there is nothing you can do about that..if you choose to go on meds you choose to put your liver at risk.i know.i have a liver disease on top of crohns and because of this there are few drugs if any that dont screw up my liver even more.good luck

I get bleeding from sugar issues believe it or not... All it takes is for me to drink juice that has high sugar content or eat some kind of treat that has a lot of sugar., or even jelly on a sandwich. Do you notice any of this for you? Funny that I can have fiber and no issue but dairy and sugar and everything goes to pot... really!

Ironically, I have a very low sugar diet. There's not much of it in the really bland foods I eat. When I'm feeling really lightheaded and starting to get tunnel vision, I have some candy set aside to deter it. Sugar usually stops me from passing out. Like I said, though, I don't have much to begin with. I would definitely agree on dairy. My stomach bloats out a ton and cramps really bad. If I have any, it's gonna be cheese. Of all the slights this disease has dealt me, cheese was the hardest blow :)

Also of note, my doctor is actually about to get me on Azathioprine. I will let you know how psychotic and broken it makes me.

Don't psyche yourself out before actually trying something. We should all try to have an open mind when trying a different treatment. OUr attitudes can also play a part in healing, feeling good etc. I'm not saying be cheering and all will be well, but you know, Chin up.

JoeReader: Aza has been ok for me. I keep ask my doc to increase my dosage, as Im' still not in remission - instead he increased my Humira. ??? ok. I did get some nasty headaches when I first when on it. Take your full dose at bedtime if you can to help avoid.

I've heard great things about aloe vera pills. I'm trying them right now, but nothing.
