Majority of Ayurvedic treatment involves herbal formulations. There are 2 very commonly used herbs Aegle marmelos (bael fruit) and Holarrhena antidysenterica (Kutaj) which can be used long term and they do not have any side effects like drugs. These are the main ingredients, You can google and study about these herbs.
The formulation has been tried before in clinical practice and was found to be useful in certain number of cases of IBD. The activity was comparable with the standard drug prednisolone. In fact alternate systems are more suitable than drugs and chemicals for chronic diseases.

Thanks for the link to the study. I'm just beginning to learn about Ayurvedic medicine after having amazing success doing yoga. As I understand it, diet and specific yoga exercises (asana) are a standard and effective treatment for UC. Here's a link to a small study
