My two cents:
The studies they do with probiotics are done on rats that have been genetically tampered with to exhibit symptoms of IBD. It turns out that the probiotics that reduce symptoms of IBD in one strain of rat do absolutely nothing for a different strain of IBD test rat. Not only is there no such thing as a one-size-fits-all probiotic (recent study has found three intestinal bacterial colony types, like blood types) it is very difficult to know if you need probiotics or not. One thing for sure, when your IBD is active, bacteria passes into the bloodstream that normally shouldn't - that includes probiotics. So IBD active buyers beware of designer intestinal bacteria. Just sayin'.
I've tried probiotics a couple of times over the course of the last 10 years and at times I thought they have helped me, but honestly in looking back, I think the affects were really minimal if any and how I felt had more to do with how I was eating in general. Now some people here rave about probiotics so maybe it's worth a shot but I tend to be on board with Truthy when it comes to probiotics.
My GI had never recommended probiotics to me before. I remember seeing something about it on here before as well as seeing commercials and such and had decided to try them on my own.
Now I'm not entirely sure if there is not more at play here, but to be honest I am feeling pretty good. The last two days have been the best days for me in months. However, a part of me wonders if I'm only feeling okay because I haven't been eating as much. I've got little to no appetite so I'm sticking mainly to soup and crackers, apple sauce.. etc. But I experience the majority of my blood loss in the morning and have had minimal the last few days. So my fingers are crossed that the probiotics have something to do with it!
