it keeps me awake sometimes. I just don.t know why I do it at night..... during the day Im fine no coughing breathing is good, I was sick about a week ago, not real bad but I was coughing a lot but I feel better now except for the wheezing!!! Is this just something that goes along w/ copd? or should I have this check out? thanks for all your help

I think wheezing is one of those symptoms that can have different triggers for each of us. When I smoked I used to have it more at night, and in my head I blamed it on gravity, sort-of envisioning the mucus in my lungs as cake batter than instead of pooling in one space when I'm upright spreads out to cover/irritate the whole lung when I would lay down.

You might want to ask people around you, though. Apparently the running joke in the family was mom's noisy breathing for years and years, even though mom had no idea.

Hi Linda,
I would go to the Dr. and have it checked. Mine is also worse at night and I don't know why either. Do you have asthma with the COPD? I've always thought the wheezing comes from Asthma, but I'm no Dr. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm far to middling sure that it's part of the COPD territory. I wheeze at night, but that just lets me know I'm still breathing.
That being said, you probably should check with your doc. He may recommend nebulizer treatments or some such like...

I have Asthma and I did the same thing until I went on Singulair, now I don't. I take it at the same time everyday never miss.

Have you considered allergies? They are a common cause of wheezing. And you can not be allergic to something & suddenly develop allergy to it. A fairly easy way to test this is to try claritan, zyterc & allegra each over the period of a couple of weeks to see if one really helps. Also keeping pets out of your bed and bedroom is worth a try.

Fyi, many people wheeze less in cooler temperatures. Perhaps making it a bit cooler at night will help you too.

Asthma is not COPD, but lots of folks with COPD have asthma.

i don't think i wheeze, but then i'm hard of hearing so im not sure ;)
i do know that all my life, i've breathed better in a cooler room like caitsmom mentiond. and i also take my allergy med at night so maybe that helps.
when i stopped smoking everything changed too. i went from wheezing all the time (not just at night) but also, where i had a wet cough then, i now have dry (to the point i can't cough anything up even when i feel i need to)
i hope you find an answer to give you comfort at night ((((HUGS))))
